Lander University Crew Facilities Updated Amid Winter Weather Challenges

As winter continues to exert its icy grip on the Southeast, weather-related disruptions have made headlines across South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. Local schools are adjusting their schedules to keep students safe while navigating the challenging conditions.

School Schedules Adjusted Across the Region

In South Carolina, many school districts are taking proactive measures in response to lingering icy roads. In Greenville County, for instance, all schools will operate on a two-hour delay on Monday, January 13. However, bus services will not run on certain icy routes, and families will be informed if their children’s transportation is affected. Despite the delay, the school day will wrap up at its standard time.

Heading over to Spartanburg County, it’s a similar situation, with nearly all school districts (with the exception of District 4) running on that two-hour delay schedule. Meanwhile, Greenwood County is one of the lucky areas; all public schools are set to resume a normal schedule as conditions have improved.

In Anderson County, a two-hour delay will be in effect for all school districts, just like in Oconee and Cherokee Counties. Pickens County reflects the same cautious approach with every school operating on a two-hour delay to ensure safety for all students and staff.

North Carolina Schools Face Remote Learning and Closures

As we shift our focus to North Carolina, schools there are seeing a mix of remote learning days and closures. In Henderson County, the public schools will have a remote learning day as concerns over refreezing emerge. Nearby in Polk County, students will be staying home, as schools are closed entirely on Monday.

Jackson County is experiencing closures too, providing an optional workday for teachers to prepare for future lessons. In Haywood County, schools will be shuttered with remote learning for students, and teachers can choose to come in to work on their professional responsibilities. Nantahala School and those in Franklin area under Macon County will shift to remote learning as well.

Transylvania County has opted for a virtual learning day due to icy conditions, while Yancey County is also closed, but with a temporary workday available for teachers. In Rutherford County, all schools will hold a remote learning day to navigate the tricky terrain. McDowell County is closing its doors for students while allowing staff a chance to arrive two hours later.

Swain County has taken a similar route; students will stay home, enjoying a day off, while teachers can select an optional workday.

Georgia Schools Likewise Affected

Turning to Georgia, Hart County schools will follow suit with operations beginning on a two-hour delay. Franklin County, though, has made the decision to close schools for students entirely, offering teachers the chance to work if they choose. Elbert County is easing into the day with a two-hour delay as well, albeit with some buses taking alternate routes to maintain safety. Meanwhile, Stephens County has called for a total school closure on Monday.

With weather conditions remaining less than ideal, school administrations in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia are prioritizing student safety first and foremost. Adjustments to the school schedules reflect our communities’ commitment to protecting young learners while ensuring they receive an education, even during challenging times.

As always, parents and guardians are encouraged to stay alert for updates from their respective school districts to stay in the loop about any changes. Hang in there, everyone; spring is just around the corner, and we’ll soon be basking in warmer weather once again!
