Winter Storm Watch Issued for Upstate South Carolina

Greenville, South Carolina — As we gear up for the weekend, it looks like Mother Nature has a surprise in store for us. On Wednesday at 3:03 p.m., the National Weather Service (NWS) in Greenville-Spartanburg issued a Winter Storm Watch for our area. This watch will take effect from Friday at 7 a.m. and will last until Saturday at 7 a.m. Areas under this watch include the Pickens Mountains, Greenville Mountains, Greater Oconee, Greater Pickens, Southern Spartanburg, and Greenwood County.

What to Expect

Forecasters predict some heavy mixed precipitation in the forecast, which means we could see both snow and ice. If you’re outside the mountains, expect total snow and sleet accumulations between 1 to 3 inches, along with potential ice accumulations around one-tenth of an inch. This could impact areas not just in South Carolina but also parts of northeast Georgia, Piedmont, and western North Carolina.

The NWS warns that snow and ice accumulations could make many roads “treacherous and impassable.” If you’re planning on traveling, this is something worth considering. The weight of the snow and ice could also pose risks by bringing down tree limbs and power lines, potentially leading to scattered outages. Given these hazardous conditions, both the Friday morning and evening commutes could be challenging.

Safety First: What You Should Do

With winter weather-related vehicle crashes leading to over 6,000 fatalities and more than 480,000 injuries nationwide each year, it’s crucial to prioritize safety. The NWS states that a Winter Storm Watch indicates there’s a potential for significant snow, sleet, or ice accumulations that could disrupt travel plans. So if you must venture out during this storm, make sure to take extra precautions.

Here are some winter weather driving tips to keep in mind:

  • Slow down! This is not the time to rush.
  • If the temperature is near freezing, assume that roads may be icy.
  • Avoid driving if possible, especially if you see ice on power lines or tree branches.
  • If driving is a must, try to select a route with fewer trees and power lines. These could snap under the weight of the icy conditions.
  • If you happen to come across a downed power line, never touch it! Instead, call 911 for help.

Stay Informed

As the storm approaches, it’s vital to stay updated on the latest forecasts. Keep your radio tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your usual weather channel to receive timely updates. The situation could change quickly, so being informed can make all the difference.

In conclusion, let’s work together to stay safe this weekend! Gather around with your family, perhaps whip up a cozy meal, and stay inside as the winter weather rolls in. Whether it’s snow or ice, being prepared is the best way to enjoy the beauty of a winter storm from the warmth of your home.

Stay warm and safe, Greenville!
