Wayne’s journey came to an end at the Care of the Piedmont Hospice and Palliative House, surrounded by his loved ones who provided him comfort in his final moments.
A Life Rooted in Service
Wayne was born on March 6, 1938, in the vibrant city of Gaffney, South Carolina. He was the proud son of the late John Albert Vassey and Ethel Coyle Vassey. After completing his education at Gaffney High School in 1956, Wayne took the first steps on a path of service that would define his life. He served with honor in the United States Marine Corps for four years, laying a strong foundation of discipline and dedication.
After his military service, Wayne attended the University of South Carolina, where he pursued a degree in Criminal Justice. This chose career path led him to join the South Carolina Highway Patrol, where he proudly served for 11 years. His commitment to public safety was profound and left a lasting impact on many lives.
A Passion for Community and the Outdoors
Wayne did not stop there; after his tenure with the Highway Patrol, he transitioned to a role at CSX railroad, where he dedicated an impressive 29 years of service before officially retiring. His commitment to community, both in law enforcement and beyond, established him as a beloved figure in Greenwood and the surrounding areas.
His faith also played a significant role in his life, as Wayne was a longtime member of the Abbeville International Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was known for his friendly demeanor and willingness to lend a hand, fostering a sense of belonging in his congregation.
In addition to his professional dedication, Wayne was an avid outdoorsman. His love for nature and adventure brought joy not only to his life but also to those who had the pleasure of joining him on various expeditions and adventures.
Family Legacy
Wayne’s legacy lives on through his family. He is survived by his two daughters: Rhonda V. Thomason and her husband Larry, and Wayne Len Vassey and her spouse Richard, both of whom were sources of immense pride and joy for him. He also leaves behind a loving brother, Kenneth Vassey, who resides in Gaffney, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who will cherish their memories of him.
Wayne was also a proud grandfather to Courtney Seavey (married to Josh), Beth Thomason, and Brooke Thomason (married to Grady). Additionally, he was a delighted great-grandfather to Kendall, Brady, Brett, and Cruze, who brought endless joy into his life.
Farewell and Contributions
Wayne was predeceased by his brother, Dean Vassey, but his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Graveside services were held on February 10, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Melrose Cemetery, with Rev. Ray Massey officiating the ceremony, celebrating Wayne’s life and legacy.
In honor of his memory, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Care of the Piedmont Hospice and Palliative Care and to the Abbeville International Pentecostal Holiness Church, recognizing the compassionate care and community support that Wayne cherished throughout his life.
