It’s an exciting time in Greenwood, as the community rallies behind the new coaching duo steering the girls and boys soccer teams. The husband-and-wife team, Lauren and Brian Vahjen, have jumped in with both feet, inheriting not only the job of coaches but also the challenge of balancing family and sports. With their first season underway, the early results are nothing short of impressive!
This season marks the Vahjen family’s inaugural year as head coaches of the respective teams. Lauren has taken the reins of the girls varsity squad, while Brian is coaching the boys and his two sons, Noah and Eli. The blend of family and sport creates a unique atmosphere on the field that is resonating well with players and parents alike.
As the dust settles on the early part of the season, both teams are already shining bright. The boys enjoy a robust record of 7 wins and 1 loss (7-1), while the girls have yet to taste defeat, boasting an impressive 5-0 record. Together, the Vahjen teams account for a staggering 12 wins and just one loss! This exemplary record has set a joyful tone for the entire Greenwood Christian community.
What makes this endeavor even more special is the participation of the entire Vahjen family. The couple has three children, all of whom are involved in various soccer programs at Greenwood Christian. This helps emphasize the family’s close connection to the soccer scene. Much like any devoted clan, they find themselves discussing soccer tactics even while on family vacations, seamlessly blending their love for the game with their love for one another.
Brian comes into this role with years of coaching experience under his belt, having previously led his sons in the Lakelands Toros. This background has proven invaluable as he balances the dual roles of coach and father. Equally important, Brian’s profession as a physician working with elderly patients deepens his understanding of family and community, enhancing his coaching approach.
The Vahjens met during their time playing soccer at Lander University, and their longstanding partnership of over twenty years has built a strong foundation for their coaching chemistry. They share a strong belief that their marriage contributes positively to their coaching effectiveness. Each respects the other’s methods while also providing assistance in their respective spheres, ensuring a healthy balance in their coaching strategies.
Despite the shared roles at home, Brian and Lauren have set clear boundaries regarding coaching. They never directly coach each other’s teams, which underscores their respect for one another’s approaches. Brian firmly believes in keeping professionalism on the field, allowing him to separate being a coach from being a dad while supporting his sons’ development as soccer players.
With Noah and Eli in eighth and ninth grade, respectively, along with their daughter actively engaged in soccer, the future of the Vahjen family in sports looks bright! As the season progresses, the Vahjen family and the Greenwood Christian community are rallying together with optimism, cheering for their teams as they aim for success.
For the Vahjens, Greenwood Christian has offered more than just a venue for soccer; it represents a close-knit family where every player, coach, and parent contributes to the lively spirit that surrounds the sport.
