It’s a day full of sunny skies and blustery conditions here in Greenwood. With today’s forecasts promising temperatures to reach up to 58°F, it’s a fine afternoon to be outside. However, don’t forget your windbreaker, as the gusty winds are set to pick up, reaching speeds of 20 to 30 mph coming from the west. Some places could even experience higher gusts. As we head into the night, the skies will remain clear, providing a peaceful ambiance with lows dipping near 35°F and wind speeds reducing to calmer levels between 5 and 10 mph.
The weather in Greenwood is playing out like a well-planned sports play. Our sunlit daytime gives a nod to those looking to enjoy a bit of nature, while the mild breezes set the perfect condition for thrill-seekers who enjoy a little extra excitement in the air. Weather this fitting is making November feel more like a day from an earlier, milder time of the year.
Amidst this idyllic weather, the temperature isn’t the only thing heating up. The recent game has fans and players alike revving up their energy. In a tell-all match of skill and determination, the Greenwood Christian football team faced a formidable rival in the SCISA Class 2A state semifinal.
Sadly, for the home team, victory was elusive this time as Pee Dee Academy proved to be the stronger side, securing a win with a final score of 69-33. Despite reaching such an advanced stage after seven consecutive wins and marking what has been celebrated as the most successful season in their 11-man era, Greenwood Christian couldn’t contain the offensive onslaught from Pee Dee.
Coach Will Rooney reflected on the game, taking responsibility for the team’s performance. “I didn’t have us ready to go and we just came out kind of flat,” Rooney admitted, acknowledging the need for a better game prep for matches of such critical importance. Still, he was full of praise for his players, speaking with nothing but pride about their season-long accomplishments.
“We were uncharacteristic defensively and couldn’t get a stop in the run game,” noted Rooney, crediting Pee Dee’s relentless offensive drives for the hefty points in the second quarter that effectively sealed the game’s fate. Even though the Greenwood Christian players showcased their own offensive prowess, keeping pace during the second half, the mountain was simply too high to climb.
Reflecting on the season, Rooney expressed a bittersweet sentiment, especially for the senior players who will be moving on. “I hate this for our four seniors, but we’re excited to continue to build on what we’ve accomplished so far,” Rooney shared, highlighting the team’s ambition and hopes for future seasons.
As Pee Dee Academy moves on to the championship with jubilant hopes of claiming the title, here in Greenwood, the takeaway is one of pride, accomplishments unlocked, and a future that looks as bright as today’s clear blue sky.
