Abbeville’s Buzzing with Election Excitement!
As the weather keeps us smiling, there’s a buzz around town with upcoming elections. Abbeville is gearing up for some friendly but competitive local races. There’s a lot happening in the charming town where history feels both cherished and alive!
The City Council Race
Let’s put a spotlight on the City Council race for District 2. Residents are eagerly discussing the candidates hoping to bring fresh ideas and energy. Here’s a sneak peek into the aspirations of each of the three contenders.
Ellen Leverette is passionate about keeping kids engaged and in love with their hometown, Abbeville. She shares, “Programs that involve kids during weekends and after school could really help build a sense of community from a young age.” Leverette has lived here all her life and is determined to solve small issues like standing water to make District 2 as she fondly calls it, “Pretty. Near. Perfect.”
Next is Cassandra Lomax, who was inspired by witnessing democracy in action during the 2012 presidential election. With strong roots in Abbeville, Lomax is focusing on enhancing hands-on experiences for kids and reviving transportation services to help people move easily within the town.
And then there’s the incumbent, Faye Thomas. Reflecting on her unexpected journey into politics, she reminisces about the positive impact they’ve collectively achieved, securing grants and advancing community projects. With two decades of experience, she aims to bring more opportunities for youth and a possible veterans park in the future!
The Race to the Mayor’s Office
Now shifting focus to a race that’s equally dynamic – three candidates, including the current mayor, are eyeing the esteemed position. Let’s hear about what matters most!
Jason Edwards, rolling up his sleeves for his mayoral campaign, is big on instilling respect and teamwork in government proceedings. He emphasizes, “Effective communication across all levels of government is key. Let’s hear more voices and encourage our youth to get involved!” Sounds like a plan, doesn’t it?
His counterpart, Trey Edwards, is rooted in action and impact. Re-election is on his mind and his list of accomplishments as mayor is quite the narrative. From robust waterline installments to casting a vision for a splash pad at Chestnut Park, Trey’s goal is to enhance living in Abbeville.
And here comes the fiery spirit, Spencer Sorrow, returning to the scene banking on Abbeville’s potential. Sorrow stresses the importance of promotion and attracting the right businesses, building on Abbeville’s rich history and tourism opportunities. Frustrated by council dynamics, he believes focusing on infrastructure upgrades like the city’s power lines would make a difference.
