Well, folks, looks like we’ve got another beautiful day here in Greenwood with abundant sunshine and a pleasant high of 78F. Later tonight, expect those clear skies to drop down to a cool 48F. But let’s chat about what shook up the neighborhood this past Sunday.
In the wee hours of Sunday morning, while most of us were still snuggled up in bed, a traffic accident decided to make a surprise appearance at the intersection of Highway 72 North and Deadfall Road. It seems like a vehicle had a run-in with not one, but four power poles! Around 4:30 a.m., a single vehicle veered into the poles, causing them to topple like dominoes. Yikes!
As fate would have it, those poles didn’t just go down quietly. They brought some power lines crashing down with them, leaving nearby residents in the dark.
The unsung heroes of the day? The diligent crewmen from Pike Electric who rushed onto the scene by 6:30 a.m.. With a team of three crews and a fleet of eight trucks, they worked tirelessly to fix the mess. They spent the whole day lifting and setting up new power poles while suspended in buckets high above the ground. Talk about a sky-high commitment!
Brian Bruce, the hands-on foreman, explained how the vehicle had smashed through two poles initially, which subsequently pulled down two more. Talk about a chain reaction!
It wasn’t just the poles that needed fixing. The incident also messed with a conductor and some other equipment, requiring even more expert attention. Throughout the day, the intersection remained blocked, with traffic diverted, causing quite the detour for those headed that way.
As for the power outage, it seemed pretty widespread, although exact details were hard to come by. Justo Chalaire and his family, living right at the intersection, took the day’s chaos in good spirits. Having faced similar troubles with Helene’s visit, Mr. Chalaire admitted that dealing with outages “felt kind of normal” as he relaxed with a soda and watched the repair efforts unfold.
Betty Carroll, another resident, found her early morning routine interrupted. She was in the midst of cooking and preparing her Sunday school lesson when the electricity disappeared. Not one to be easily rattled, she immediately reported the outage. While parked nearby, she watched the busy workers and reflected on the morning’s events, hoping everyone involved in the accident was okay.
So, while it was a very sunny Sunday, it was unexpectedly hectic! But, it’s comforting to know that there were dedicated folks on duty, striving to restore a little normalcy to Greenwood’s lively community. Here’s to hoping the rest of the week is as calm and sunny as today promises to be.
