Orangeburg, South Carolina – A South Carolina State University (SCSU) sophomore was apprehended on February 6th in response to gunfire reports triggering an hour-long lockdown on the Orangeburg campus. The student, Rolando J. Ifill, 19, of Charleston, has been charged with carrying a firearm on school property according to a university statement.
Upon receipt of reports alleging gunfire in an academic building, the SCSU campus police “immediately subdued the suspected shooter in a foot chase,” stated the university release. However, detailed information about the shooting incident cannot be given out as of yet, clarified a university spokesperson. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in connection with this worrying event.
A conflicting report from Claflin University, which is located close to SCSU, stated that a SCSU student, who sought refuge in Claflin’s dining hall, experienced “minor injuries” due to shattered glass; but is “safe and receiving care.” Claflin University also had to impose a lockdown on February 6th as a precautionary measure.
“I want to reassure you that the safety of our students, faculty, and staff remains our highest priority,” expressed Claflin University’s President Dwaun Warmack. He further elaborated, “Our rapid response and the measures we have implemented are part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe and secure campus environment.”
This sobering incident brings attention to the necessity of stringent gun control measures and security regulations within the educational institutions to ensure the safety of young students. The authorities are conducting thorough investigations and the story is still developing.
