GREENWOOD, S.C. — Residents of Greenwood County experienced an unsettling day on Sunday, October 13, as a series of small earthquakes rattled the area, only days after the region was hit hard by Hurricane Helene. This natural disaster had already left significant devastation in its wake, including the tragic loss of one life and considerable damage to homes and properties.
Following Helene’s impact, residents were still reeling from the storm’s effects. The state lifted its emergency status on Friday, allowing people to begin assessing the damage done to their homes and communities. In Greenwood County alone, approximately 315 homes suffered damage, with many residents quickly applying for assistance from FEMA. To date, around 12,000 individuals have submitted their applications.
Sadly, the storm’s destruction claimed the life of a local man, who tragically had a tree crash into his home during the storm. In the wake of such a heart-wrenching loss, communities have rallied to support one another; hot meals are still being served to those affected by Helene’s devastation.
Just as residents were attempting to recuperate from the storm, a wave of seismic activity added to their stress. Sunday was a day of peculiar occurrences; the day began with a moderate 2.5 magnitude earthquake striking around 10:10 AM. Many residents took to social media to express their alarm, with one resident commenting on the local sheriff’s office Facebook page: “My entire house shook at 10:10!”
The earth didn’t stop shaking there. By the end of the day, there had been a total of eight earthquakes recorded, mainly centered around the community of Coronaca. The quakes ranged from magnitudes of 1.5 to 2.5, with a 2.1 magnitude quake occurring earlier in the week on Thursday, which set the stage for the seismic uptick.
Residents reported varying experiences, with many feeling the tremors strongly. One resident shared on Facebook that she felt four of the quakes throughout the day, indicating a widespread awareness of the seismic disturbances. Posts from locals described the quakes as unsettling but, thankfully, reported no structural damage attributed to them.
It’s fascinating how nature can display such contrasting forces; first the fierce winds and floods from Helene, and now a rumbling earth. While this situation has surely been frustrating for the local community, it’s also a reminder of their resilience. After facing a hurricane, multiple earthquakes, and having to deal with damage assessment and recovery, the spirit of the residents continues to shine through.
As Greenwood County begins to rebuild and heal from the multiple challenges it has faced, the focus remains on community support and recovery efforts. Residents are encouraged to reach out for assistance and lend a hand to neighbors in need.
While the earthquakes add to the challenges, they signify a temporary disturbance in an already trying time. The community is determined to bounce back, standing together as they navigate through these tough days ahead. Who knows what nature has in store for them next, but the people of Greenwood County continue to show just how strong they can be in the face of adversity.
