Greenwood, South Carolina, is buzzing with talk following the recent release of the 2024 SC School Report Cards. On Tuesday, the South Carolina Department of Education unveiled these report cards at the locally beloved Pinecrest Elementary. This annual event provides valuable insights into how students are performing in schools across the state as we dive headfirst into the 2023-2024 academic year.
In this year’s report cards, schools have been rated on a 100-point scale, taking into account essential factors like academic achievement, student progress, graduation rates, and readiness for college and careers. However, the overall ratings revealed a bit of a surprise: fewer schools achieved an “Excellent” rating compared to last year, with 230 schools hitting that mark, down by 48 schools from 2023. Meanwhile, the “Unsatisfactory” ratings dropped from 60 to 47, showing some optimism amidst ongoing challenges.
Focusing on the numbers, approximately 54% of students in grades 3 to 8 met or exceeded expectations in English Language Arts. On a brighter note, Charleston County reported an impressive graduation rate of 88%, with 31 schools decorating themselves with that “Excellent” rating. Over in Greenville County Schools, the district achieved its highest graduation rate ever at 88.7%. These successes highlight ongoing efforts focused on offering industry certifications and college credits that students can proudly take with them.
Across the state, Richland One School District showcased improvements in student growth metrics, aligning closely with state averages. Yet, challenges remain, particularly regarding foundational math skills and early literacy. With new strategies in place, educators hope to address these gaps and create pathways for all students to succeed.
