Championship Fever Hits Rock Hill and Chester!

Rock Hill is buzzing with excitement as their girls wrestling team has just made history by winning the inaugural girls wrestling dual-team state championship! This thrilling event took place at Dreher High School in Columbia, South Carolina. The Rock Hill girls triumphed over Greenwood with a nail-biting score of 46-36, marking a significant milestone in the landscape of girls wrestling in the state.

Meanwhile, on the boys’ side, Chester’s wrestling team also celebrated a remarkable victory! They secured the Class 2A boys title by decisively defeating Buford with a score of 65-17. This win not only highlights Chester’s growing reputation in the wrestling community, but it also marks their first championship title in program history, a proud moment for all involved.

A Journey to Remember for Chester

Chester’s path to victory was paved with challenges. Their tournament journey saw them facing off against the defending champion Chesnee in the third round, a match they emerged from victorious. Adding to their incredible feat, Chester handed top-ranked Liberty their very first loss of the season before securing their place in the finals against Buford.

Chester finished the season strong with an impressive record of 34-4. Their title match began with two wins by forfeit, setting the stage for an electrifying performance. This was followed by impressive pins from their athletes — Andre Hall in the 120 lbs category and Raheem Rambert in the 126 lbs category, guiding them to a remarkable lead of 24-0.

Chester’s victorious lineup didn’t stop there; they received standout performances from Jacoby Starks Wright at 138 lbs, Omari Pendergrass at 144 lbs, Zion Carson at 190 lbs, and Jayren Holly at 285 lbs. On the opposite end, Buford sought their first-ever state title, and they did put up a valiant effort with match wins from Nathan Gardner at 132 lbs, Antonio Amos at 150 lbs, and Tucker Bohm at 215 lbs.

Rock Hill Makes History

first school to win the girls dual championship. They had previously dominated in boys wrestling with 18 titles, making their girls’ victory all the more meaningful. Their coach commended the hard work and dedication shown by the girls throughout the season.

The team featured several key players who contributed to their glorious win. Notable victories came from Maggie Cogar at 130 lbs, Braylon Adams at 135 lbs, Alicyah Thomas at 155 lbs, and many others, showcasing their impressive talent. In the championship match, Rock Hill fended off a spirited comeback attempt from Greenwood, which saw wins by Angelique Garcia Rosalies (110 lbs) and Alanise Ricardo (115 lbs), leading to an exciting conclusion.

The surge in female participation in wrestling in South Carolina is noteworthy. This year, there were 637 girls actively wrestling compared to just 365 last season, showing significant growth. On a national level, girls wrestling is also thriving, with over 64,000 participants and the NCAA has even recognized women’s wrestling as a championship sport.
