Rain Showers Expected, Greenwood Eagles Gear Up for Crucial Match This Friday

Weather Update

Greenwood, SC – As we approach the end of the week, residents can expect a weather mix featuring rain showers early in the day, becoming more intermittent by the afternoon. Highs will reach around 76°F with easterly-northeast winds at 10 to 15 mph. There’s a 40% chance of rain during daytime hours.

Overnight, the showers will persist initially but are likely to turn into cloudy conditions as temperatures dip near 65°F. Winds will die down slightly to between 5 to 10 mph from the east-northeast, and the likelihood of rain increases to 50%.

Greenwood Eagles Look to Bounce Back

The scene last Friday at the Greenwood High School football field was a bit somber as the Greenwood Eagles faced a tough game against the Dorman Cavaliers. The game ended with a narrow loss of 20-14 for the Eagles, with Greenwood only mustering 88 yards of offense in the first half and a mere 100 yards on the ground throughout the game.

However, it wasn’t all bleak; the defense shone brightly, holding off many of Dorman’s offensive attempts. The offensive side began to show some promise towards the end of the game, managing two promising drives near the end zone but converting only one into points.

Looking back, Greenwood coach Chris Liner noted, “We’re excited about a new week and have an opportunity to kind of rectify some of that stuff that we messed up on Friday.”

Next Up: The Lexington Wildcats

This coming Friday, Greenwood gears up to face the Lexington Wildcats, a team that has had an impressive start to the season with a 3-0 record. The Wildcats have not allowed more than 19 points in any of their games so far, showing their defensive prowess.

Lexington’s good,” Liner admitted. “Their opponents were all three really good teams last year, and had a lot of returning starters.”

The Wildcats’ defense operates in a similar 3-4 scheme as Dorman, spearheaded by talented linebacker Matthew McAulay and a pair of solid edge rushers, Ethan VanHouton and Logan Clarkson. On the offensive front, Lexington exhibits various formations led by quarterback Brennon Carter and running back Torie Jones.

Liner highlighted the strategic challenges ahead: “You see a lot of just jump formations, but also a lot of formations that can put you in a bind if you don’t align correctly.”

What This Game Means for the Eagles

With an eight-team region this year, Greenwood aims to kickstart its region schedule positively beginning on September 20 with a home game against T.L. Hanna. A win on Friday would be a significant boost for the team.

“We definitely need a shot of confidence,” Liner said. “We played really well all preseason, played good in our first game, and then we kind of got a dose of reality Friday night. It would obviously be good for us to put that game behind us and not let them beat us twice.” He added, “To come out and play really well in this game, I think, would be huge for us.
