Greenwood recently became a hub of celebration and excitement as Piedmont Technical College (PTC) honored an incredible 460 graduates during their recent commencement ceremonies held at the James Medford Family Event Center. The atmosphere buzzed with pride as these graduates were recognized for their hard work, determination, and commitment to bettering themselves. A total of 617 academic credentials were awarded, shining the spotlight on a diverse group of individuals who earned everything from associate degrees to diplomas and certificates.
As the proud graduates took their places, the President of PTC, Dr. Hope E. Rivers, took a moment to praise their dedication. She expressed how crucial it is for graduates to hold tight to the college’s motto of “expecting more.” This phrase encapsulates the journey of these students, as many have faced challenges but seized opportunities, knowing that their hard work will pave the way for a brighter future.
Not only is PTC shaping individual lives, but it’s also making an impressive economic impact. The college contributes about $240.8 million annually, which is comparable to hosting the World Series 31 times in a year! This shows just how integral PTC is to the Greenwood community and surrounding areas.
The ceremonies featured incredible alumni speakers, like Nadia Sanders, who motivated graduates to recognize their strengths and potential. Another graduate, Heather Strickland, shared her personal story about pursuing an Occupational Therapy Assistant Program, driven by her desire to provide better support for her children. Meanwhile, Derrick Goodman reminded the audience that it’s never too late to embrace education, encouraging adults to explore the possibilities of returning to school.
Notable graduates hailed from Laurens County, with standout achievements that included a diploma in Practical Nursing, an associate degree in Nursing, and an associate degree in Mechatronics Technology. This just goes to show the range of programs PTC offers to cater to diverse career aspirations. Graduates were recognized for their outstanding academic performance, with distinctions such as Summa Cum Laude for a GPA of 4.0, Magna Cum Laude for those between 3.75 and 3.99, and Cum Laude for GPAs ranging from 3.5 to 3.74.
Adding a sprinkle of excitement to this year’s festivities was the college’s introduction of a new mascot named Blaze. Representing renewal and transformation, Blaze was selected based on a survey showing that an astounding 90% of the college community favored having a mascot. The reveal event for Blaze included delightful giveaways and Phoenix-themed refreshments, galvanizing school spirit and unifying the community.
In the same spirit of transformation, Ana Ramos, a standout welding student, shared her perspective on the importance of pursuing hands-on careers. Now employed as a full-time welder, Ramos has been vocal about encouraging women to enter welding programs, which are often male-dominated. She advocates for trying something new and emphasizes how hard work indeed leads to substantial rewards.
Now that the ceremonies are over, those 460 graduates of Piedmont Technical College stand poised at the beginning of new adventures, equipped with the skills and knowledge to meet the world. As they step forward, they carry with them the aspirations they’ve nurtured and the support of an inspiring community that believes in their potential. The future is bright, and with the spirit of transformation and empowerment behind them, there’s no telling how far these graduates will go!
