Potential Tropical Cyclone Four Could Affect South Carolina

Will This Potential Tropical Cyclone Affect Greenville, SC?

Greenville—Floridians and Carolinians alike are keeping a close eye on Potential Tropical Cyclone Four, which is currently making its way over Cuba. As of 11 a.m. Friday, the National Hurricane Center has issued its first advisory on this developing system. The advisory shows the tropical depression over Cuba, with projected paths crossing the Gulf of Mexico before turning back over Florida and then into the Atlantic.

What to Expect and When

The cone of uncertainty, denoting the storm’s probable path, includes much of South Carolina. It’s crucial to note that many factors, such as the storm’s strength and exact path, remain uncertain. If the system strengthens into a tropical storm, it will be named Debby, the fourth named storm of this season.

Currently, the tropical depression is about 420 miles southeast of Key West. There have already been official statements from the hurricane center: a Tropical Storm Warning is now in effect for the southwest coast of the Florida peninsula from East Cape Sable to Bonita Beach. Additionally, a Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for the Florida Keys, the southern coast of the Florida peninsula, and the west coast of the Florida peninsula north of Bonita Beach to Aripeka.

Weather Forecast for Greenville Area

The development of this potential storm will heavily influence Greenville’s weather in the upcoming week. The current forecast by NOAA shows high temperatures in the 90s and some overnight showers and thunderstorms over the weekend. High winds are not anticipated right now.

The hurricane center predicts the system will pass over northern Florida late Sunday and reenter the Atlantic on Monday morning. From there, it is likely to move up the Eastern Seaboard, impacting parts of South Carolina and North Carolina by the middle of next week. This system could bring heavy rain, rough surf, and other weather impacts to these regions.

Stay Prepared

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, and it’s always wise to be prepared, even if this particular system does not pose a direct threat to the South Carolina coast.

Current Conditions

  • Location: 90 miles east-southeast of Camaguey, Cuba; 420 miles southeast of Key West
  • Maximum sustained winds: 30 mph
  • Movement: West-northwest at 16 mph

Stay safe and keep an eye on the updates as this potential cyclone develops over the next few days.
