Piedmont Technical College Introduces Blaze the Phoenix as New Mascot

Greenwood, SC – As students returned Monday for the start of fall classes, Piedmont Technical College (PTC) revealed the name of their new mascot: Blaze the Phoenix. The announcement was made by PTC President Dr. Hope E. Rivers during an event held outside the Student Center on the Greenwood campus.

“Blaze isn’t just a name; it’s a powerful symbol of action each of us can take as a Phoenix,” said Rivers, standing next to the new mascot. “Just as a single spark can ignite a roaring flame, each of you has the potential to light up your own path, to blaze a trail of success and contribute to the warmth and strength of our community,” she continued.

Rivers emphasized that Blaze represents the spirit of renewal and transformation that defines the student journey. “It’s a bold symbol of inspiration and captures the essence of what PTC stands for.”

Community Involvement and Selection Process

The decision to introduce a new mascot was driven by overwhelming community support. A survey conducted among faculty, staff, and students showed that 90% of respondents believed PTC should have a mascot. The idea of a Phoenix was initially shared with students during Spring Activities Day and received positive feedback.

“At that time, we asked for your feedback to find the perfect name for our new mascot,” Rivers recounted. Students, faculty, and staff submitted 33 potential names. The Mascot Committee then narrowed the field down to three finalists: Felix, Blaze, and Ash. Voting started in the spring, allowing the college community to select Blaze as the final choice.

Celebration and Future Plans

After the name was revealed, students took photos with Blaze in the Student Center and enjoyed phoenix-themed giveaways, free cupcakes, popcorn, and bottled water. The mascot is expected to play a significant role in enhancing school spirit and creating a stronger sense of community within the college.

Blaze will serve as a visually striking symbol, one that will boost brand recognition and become a key element in PTC’s marketing efforts. By embodying the college’s values, the Phoenix is hoped to attract new students and strengthen the college’s overall appeal.

“This is just the beginning of what Blaze will bring to our campus,” Rivers noted. “It’s about community, transformation, and the bright future that lies ahead for each of our students.”
