Tragically, the missing woman was identified as 30-year-old Staff Sergeant (SSgt.) Porsha Griffin. Griffin, who served in the South Carolina National Guard and was a recent nursing school graduate, went missing after a tubing accident on May 25. She had fallen into the water while tubing behind a boat and was not wearing a life jacket, according to officials. Sadly, she did not resurface after the fall.
SSgt. Griffin was a dedicated member of the South Carolina National Guard, where she served with the 116th Tactical Installation Networking Enhanced Company, 228th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade in Spartanburg. Her commitment to serving her country and her community was evident, and her recent achievement of graduating from nursing school highlighted her dedication to helping others.
In the wake of this heartbreaking incident, the South Carolina National Guard expressed their heartfelt condolences, stating, “We would like to express our most heartfelt condolences to Staff Sgt. Griffin’s mother, daughter, and family. You will be in our thoughts and prayers. Additionally, we would like to thank the Department of Natural Resources officers, investigators, and divers involved, as well as community members whose assistance and support did not go unnoticed.”
The Greenwood community has shown immense support throughout the search and recovery process. The collaborative efforts of the SCDNR officers, divers, and local citizens exemplify the collective spirit during times of tragedy.
The coroner’s office confirmed SSgt. Porsha Griffin’s identity and acknowledged her lasting impact both as a military officer and as an individual striving to make a difference in the field of healthcare.
This unfortunate incident also underscores the importance of safety measures when engaging in water activities. Authorities emphasize the need for wearing life jackets and being cautious while enjoying outdoor water activities. These precautions are essential for the safety of individuals and can help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The community’s heart goes out to the family, friends, and colleagues of SSgt. Porsha Griffin. Let us keep them in our thoughts during this difficult time. As further details come to light, the community remains united in their support for those mourning the loss of a beloved daughter, mother, and soldier.
