Body of Missing South Carolina National Guard Soldier Found in Lake Greenwood

LAURENS COUNTY, S.C. – During a somber afternoon on Lake Greenwood, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) confirmed that the body of a missing woman was found, bringing closure to a distressing ordeal. Using the help of various officers, investigators, and divers, the search concluded with the discovery of the woman’s body on Monday afternoon.

SCDNR released a statement expressing, “Our officers have recovered the body of a missing woman at Lake Greenwood in Laurens County. The woman went missing after a tubing incident on May 25. We extend our gratitude to all of the officers, investigators and divers involved, as well as the supportive Greenwood community and everyone who offered additional help. Our heartfelt condolences remain with the victim’s family and loved ones.”

Tragically, the missing woman was identified as 30-year-old Staff Sergeant (SSgt.) Porsha Griffin. Griffin, who served in the South Carolina National Guard and was a recent nursing school graduate, went missing after a tubing accident on May 25. She had fallen into the water while tubing behind a boat and was not wearing a life jacket, according to officials. Sadly, she did not resurface after the fall.

SSgt. Griffin was a dedicated member of the South Carolina National Guard, where she served with the 116th Tactical Installation Networking Enhanced Company, 228th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade in Spartanburg. Her commitment to serving her country and her community was evident, and her recent achievement of graduating from nursing school highlighted her dedication to helping others.
