Emma Celeste Gusko Crowned Miss Lander 2024-25, Aims to Inspire Through History

GREENWOOD, S.C. — A New Crown and a Passion for the Past

In the heart of Greenwood, celebration and excitement were in the air as Emma Celeste Gusko captured the title of Miss Lander 2024-25. A sophomore with a passion that harks back to human beginnings—history. Being a Teaching Fellows student hailing from Lander University, Emma has always been interested by the tales of the past, and she’s ready to channel her newfound role to ignite curiosity and enthusiasm in others.

History,” she asserts with a gleam in her eye, “is so interesting because it changes from day to day.” As a sophomore secondary education major with an emphasis on this riveting subject, Emma has a vision: to transform the dusty tomes of yore into stories that leap off the page for students.

She was one of seven contestants in an exhilarating pageant—a prelude to the Miss South Carolina competition. Admitting she joined for a mix of fun and the opportunity to forge new friendships, turning past experiences into new memories proved to be her magical formula for success.

Addison Elizabeth Davis, a junior majoring in exercise science, was the first runner-up. She also proudly pocketed the People’s Choice Award, a recognition dear to her since it came from her peers at Lander University. It’s little moments like these that create a wholesome community spirit.

Another highlight, and perhaps a shining example of how camaraderie was built, comes from Emma Grace Avant, majoring in graphic design. Voted Miss Congeniality for her embodiment of kindness and hospitality during the pageant journey, she also earned the Talent Award for her lovely rendition of “She Used to be Mine” from the popular musical, Waitress.

Emma, with kindness woven into her own fabric, envisions using her platform to inspire fellow Lander women to step out of their comfort zones. She firmly believes that participating in pageants can be an empowering journey, one that can make them feel as though their voices matter. Her goals stretch towards larger horizons as she looks forward to the Miss South Carolina Pageant, eager to take part in representing her treasured community with pride and grace.

The Evening’s Charm

The evening gown competition wasn’t just about showcasing elegance, but also a platform for genuine wisdom. When asked what advice she’d impart to the next generation, Gusko’s response was heartfelt, “Be nice to others … what matters first is your heart.” A simple yet profound piece of advice echoing the belief that empathy and kindness lay the foundation for meaningful lives.

This celebrated event was supported by the Lander University chapter of the National Association for Music Education. An alumna of Lander and current Student Life coordinator, Lillian Strawn, guided the event as the emcee with her usual flair. Musical delights spun through the air, courtesy of the delightful BarberCats, Lander University’s very own barbershop quartet.

President Richard Cosentino took pride in congratulating the remarkable winners, including Emma Celeste Gusko for her win, Addison Elizabeth Davis, and Emma Grace Avant, as each contestant brought their unique charm and prowess to the pageant stage. This event wasn’t just a competition; it was a mosaic of talents coming together, forming a colorful canvas of unity and ambition.

Greenwood continues to buzz with activity. From jazz ensembles to community gatherings, there’s always something happening in this vibrant South Carolina town—where the past is celebrated, the present cherished, and the future eagerly anticipated.
