Greenwood Mourns the Loss of Local Resident Joseph Michael “Mike” Korrek

The community of Greenwood is in mourning as they bid farewell to a cherished resident, Joseph Michael “Mike” Korrek, who passed away peacefully at his home on September 4, 2024. Mike, aged 69, was a well-known and loved figure in the area, renowned for his friendly demeanor and community spirit.

Early Life and Navy Service

Born on June 20, 1955, in Augusta, GA, Mike was the son of Thomas Arthur and Mary Ouzts Korrek. From a young age, Mike exhibited a deep sense of duty and commitment. This dedication led him to serve in the U.S. Navy, a period that shaped his character and instilled values of discipline and honor.

Professional and Community Life

After his service in the Navy, Mike dedicated many years working at Greenwood Mills, where he forged enduring friendships and earned the respect of his colleagues. He was also a devoted member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Edgefield, attending services regularly and contributing to the church’s activities.

Family and Personal Ties

Mike’s family played a central role in his life. Despite his passing, he leaves behind a legacy of love and fond memories. His parents, Thomas and Mary, remain residents of Edgefield, exemplifying the close-knit family bond they shared. Mike’s brother, Kenneth “Ken” Korrek of Edgefield, along with his grandchildrenHarley Shore (Brett) of Kernersville, NC, Leila Moore and Colt Korrek, both of Lexington, NC, Chelsey Carpenter of Winston-Salem, NC, and Aiden Jennings of Greenwood—were all integral parts of his life. He will also be missed dearly by his special friend, Laurie Stuart, who was by his side at their home.

A Heartfelt Farewell

Mike had endured the heartache of losing two children, Chris Korrek and Jamie Korrek, a profound loss that marked his journey. Despite these personal tragedies, Mike remained a figure of strength and warmth in the community.

No Services Planned

At this time, no public services are planned to honor Mike’s memory. The family has expressed their wishes for privacy as they navigate this difficult time. They are, however, comforted by the outpouring of support from friends and neighbors who have shared their condolences and fond memories of Mike.

Community Support

The Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home is honored to serve the Korrek family during their time of grief. The community of Greenwood stands united in offering their support and extending their sympathies to Mike’s family.

Mike Korrek’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of many, but his life and legacy will continue to inspire and bring warmth to those who knew him. The heartfelt stories and memories shared within the community ensure that his spirit will live on.
