Local Teen Arrested on Attempted Murder Charges Amidst Cloudy Day in Greenwood

Greenwood: A Cloudy Day Turns Even Darker with the Arrest of a Local Teen

Greenwood residents woke to a mostly cloudy day, with temperatures reaching a high of 76°F and gentle winds from the NNE at 5 to 10 mph. As the day progressed, the weather forecast called for cloudy skies and the possibility of a few sprinkles later in the evening. However, the peaceful weather belied a more serious local development.

In a developing story, an 18-year-old resident, Ja’Kwon Cornlious Elmore, from Abbeville County, faced serious charges today in Greenwood. Elmore has been charged with six counts of attempted murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, and firing into a dwelling.

On Wednesday, local officers responded to reports of shots being fired on Plowden Avenue—an event that rocked the Greenwood community. Upon arrival at the scene, the authorities discovered shell casings and damage to a residence that had been pierced by gunfire. The incident prompted a quick and collaborative response from Greenwood detectives and the Abbeville County Sheriff’s Department. Their teamwork culminated in the execution of a search warrant in Abbeville County, ultimately leading to the swift apprehension of Elmore. He is currently in custody at the Greenwood County Detention Center.

The community is buzzing with shock and speculation, especially given Elmore’s role as a running back/defensive back on the Abbeville High School football team. However, as the investigation proceeds, school officials remain tight-lipped. The school’s athletic director, Maggie Jameson, alongside coach Jamie Nickles, chose not to comment on Elmore’s current status within the athletic program.

Offering a glimpse into the school’s response, Abbeville High School Principal Scott White addressed the situation, affirming that “…all district, school, and athletic department protocols and procedures are being followed and implemented following the news of the arrest. We will continue cooperating with law enforcement’s investigation to the extent necessary, involving AHS students, staff, and campus safety.” He further noted the school’s stance on confidentiality, emphasizing they do not comment on student matters concerning federally protected confidential student information.

The charges against Elmore are severe, and the community is encouraged to assist in the ongoing investigation. Detectives are still piecing together the sequence of events and implore anyone with information to reach out to the Greenwood Police Department Detectives Division at 942-8407.

As the case unfurls, and more details emerge, the community stands at the ready, determined to heal and move forward. The overcast sky mirrors the sombre mood of the day, as Greenwood and Abbeville residents await clarity and resolution to this alarming incident.

A Timely Reminder

As the local weather promises mostly cloudy conditions, with temperatures dipping to a low of 56°F as winds turn light and variable, it serves as a reminder of the unpredictability life sometimes brings. The community remains united, under the veil of clouds, hoping for sunny days and brighter stories in the near future.
