LANCASTER, SC – In an electrifying showdown at Finis Horne Arena, the Lander University women’s volleyball team achieved a remarkable feat by sweeping longtime rival Augusta, winning all three sets and clinching a share of the Peach Belt Conference regular season title. The match took place on Wednesday, November 14, 2024, drawing a record crowd of 776 fans who witnessed the historic victory.
The atmosphere was charged as the Bearcats took on their rivals under bright lights and enthusiastic cheers. Lander dominated the scoreboard throughout, showing exceptional teamwork and skill that left the Augusta team struggling to keep up. This victory not only marked a significant win against a fierce opponent but also secured Lander’s place in the Peach Belt Conference’s upper echelon for the first time in program history.
The event saw a record-setting attendance, thanks in part to the university’s first-year experience program, which promoted the match as part of the second annual “Pack the Stands” night. The excitement was palpable as students and supporters flooded the arena, filling every seat to cheer on their team. Local business Papa Johns sponsored the event, further enhancing the community spirit.
After the match, Head Coach Reynolds expressed pride in his team’s performance. “Augusta has been a nemesis for us for a couple of years. We were in a similar situation last year where we had to win some games against them, and we weren’t able to do it. So to do that in three sets, on our home floor, in front of an amazing crowd, was icing on the cake,” he stated.
The victory against Augusta sets the Bearcats on a path to their next challenge, as they head to St. Augustine, Florida, on Friday to face Flagler College. This upcoming match is crucial; a win would secure the Bearcats a definitive 7-1 conference record and grant them the Peach Belt regular season championship outright. In contrast, a loss would lead to a tie with Flagler, resulting in both teams sharing the title with a 6-2 record.
Coach Reynolds acknowledged the hard work put in by the players over the years. “I came here four years ago to win a conference championship, and it’s been four years in the making. Our work is not finished. It’s been a magical season, and we want to keep it rolling,” he affirmed.
The overwhelming support from fans has played a crucial role in the Bearcats’ success this season. The university community’s involvement is a testament to the growing popularity of women’s sports at Lander, reflecting a commitment to fostering talent and spirit in all athletics.
As Lander prepares for the important match ahead, the excitement around the team builds, with fans eager to see if they can clinch the championship they’ve long fought for. The game against Flagler College is not just another match; it is a shot at history, a chance for the Bearcats to boldly claim their place in the Peach Belt Conference.
