Students participated in hands-on activities, including a fashion show, resume building, and mock interviews. The event aimed to enhance students’ confidence and financial literacy, preparing them for future careers. Local representatives emphasized the importance of exploring diverse educational pathways. Overall, the event laid a strong foundation for students entering the workforce.
In an effort to prime high schoolers for the working world, Lander University in Greenwood recently rolled out its first-ever Workforce Development Day. This exciting initiative welcomed nearly 300 students, giving them a head start on their careers with essential job skills. Who knew learning could be such a blast?
The event was packed with practical, hands-on activities. One of the highlights was the fashion show, where students strutted their stuff to showcase the dos and don’ts of appropriate interview attire. After all, first impressions count! With the fashion prowess on display, students were encouraged to dress for success on their future job interviews.
But that’s not all! Attendees dove into the nitty-gritty details of job searching. They picked up vital skills needed for crafting stellar resumes that grab employers’ attention and participated in mock interviews conducted by seasoned business professionals. No stone was left unturned as the university focused on building student confidence and understanding the ins and outs of today’s job search processes.
Lander University aims to show that they genuinely care about students’ futures, and this event is just one way to prove it. Ongoing educational opportunities and tailored programs are part of their commitment to empower local youth!
Laura Cox, a representative from the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce, also joined the fun, emphasizing how crucial it is for students to know the educational pathways available after high school. With a wide array of options, students were encouraged to look beyond just traditional college routes for their future careers.
In addition to traditional job skills, Casey Cline, Lander’s director of workforce and career development, highlighted how the event gave students a taste of the college experience. They explored the beautiful campus while learning about potential educational opportunities right in their backyard. Who wouldn’t want to check out a local university while getting ready for the workforce?
Of course, entering the workforce also means dealing with money! That’s why the program included a segment on financial literacy. Young participants learned how to manage their first paychecks, navigate the world of bank accounts, and the importance of saving money. Knowledge is power, and understanding finances is key to making the most of their earnings! This is a great foundation for young adults as they embark on their journey to financial independence.
Pamela Martin, a counselor at Greenwood District 50’s G. Frank Russell Technology Center, expressed how valuable this event was in preparing students for future careers and making them aware of workforce participation. It acknowledged that not every young person will take the college route, but that doesn’t diminish the importance of being job-ready!
Overall, Lander University’s first Workforce Development Day was an inspiring event filled with valuable experiences and skills that these high school students will carry with them into their futures. So here’s to the next generation of job seekers—let’s hope they bring their A-game with all the great tips and tricks they learned!
