With a thriving sport management program, these ambitious individuals are gaining hands-on experience and recognition in the sports industry. They have volunteered at numerous NCAA and PGA events, and their hard work is paying off as they prepare for upcoming major events, highlighting the bright future awaiting these students in sports leadership roles.
Greenwood, South Carolina is buzzing with enthusiasm as Lander University students are making big waves in the world of sports! Whether it’s volunteering at the Super Bowl or competing in prestigious sales championships, it’s safe to say these students are living life on the fast track to success.
In a remarkable show of spirit and dedication, five talented Lander students recently volunteered at Super Bowl LIX in the vibrant city of New Orleans. Their roles in the Fan Experience and Game Day Operations were pivotal in enhancing the excitement of the event. Talk about a unique chance to rub elbows with sports fans from all around!
The growing popularity of the sport management program at Lander University is evident as enrollment has seen an impressive increase, more than tripling over the past three years! Under the guidance of Dr. David Zinn, a passionate assistant professor and recipient of the coveted Lander’s 2023-24 Jr. Faculty Teaching Award, students are diving into a rich educational journey that blends rigorous coursework with real-world experiences at notable sporting events.
In fact, Lander students have volunteered at over 20 major NCAA, Peach Belt Conference, and PGA events over the past three years, giving them practical exposure to event operations and management. These hands-on experiences are paying off, as evidenced by a cohort of six students who secured internships for the highly regarded RBC Heritage PGA Golf Tournament last year. Moreover, five of these eager students are preparing to showcase their skills once again in 2025!
Students in the business realm are also stepping into the spotlight! Recently, Lander University competed in the National Collegiate Sports Sales Championship (NCSSC) in Atlanta, finishing an impressive No. 12 nationally after the preliminary virtual round. Out of over 300 students from 75 universities, individual Lander students ranked No. 5 and No. 45. What an amazing achievement!
These ambitious students presented mock sales pitches to seasoned industry professionals, tackling categories like ticket sales, speed selling, and corporate sponsorships. This real-world simulation brilliantly prepares them for successful careers in sports operations and event management.
Lander’s sport management curriculum is carefully crafted, covering critical areas such as economics, accounting, law, entrepreneurship, facility management, marketing, and analytics. This well-rounded education equips students for various leadership roles in the ever-evolving sports industry, such as careers in sports marketing, event management, and athletic administration.
Looking ahead, Dr. Zinn continues to seek opportunities that provide students with even more real-world experiences. Notable upcoming events include the RBC Heritage Golf Tournament and NASCAR weekend at the Darlington Motor Speedway in April. These events will undoubtedly enrich student learning and inspire future leaders in sports.
Lander University is also recognized for its innovative spirit. The institution played a significant role in introducing “Banana Ball,” a fresh, entertaining style of baseball developed by the Savannah Bananas, during an exhibition game back in 2018. It’s a perfect example of how Lander students and alumni are shaping the future of sports entertainment.
One notable alum, Vincent DeRubeis, made headlines after recovering from a severe eye injury. He participated in tryouts and skillfully made it onto the roster for the popular barnstorming team. His journey is a testament to resilience and determination.
As Lander University students continue to thrive in their respective fields, the excitement in Greenwood is palpable and future endeavors look brighter than ever. They are not just learning about sports; they are living it!
