Greenwood, South Carolina – Lander University is experiencing a fantastic surge in its Sport Management Program, with enrollment more than tripling over the past three years! This impressive growth shows just how popular the field of sports is becoming among students who aspire to work in the sports industry. With more and more students eager to join the program, it’s clear that Lander U is on its way to becoming a hotspot for future sports professionals.
What’s driving this exciting expansion? An innovative mix of rigorous academic coursework and hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for real-world challenges in the competitive sports landscape. Students at Lander don’t just hit the books; they get their feet wet working at major sporting events nationwide, gaining valuable experience that positions them for a promising career.
Over the last three years, students have been active participants in many notable sporting events. For instance, during Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, five students played key roles in Fan Experience and Game Day Operations. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Lander students have also made their mark at over 20 major NCAA gatherings, Peach Belt Conference events, and PGA tournaments. These hands-on experiences introduce them to the thrilling world of event operations and management.
Moreover, students had the opportunity to network with over 50 sports organizations at the Breaking into Sports Job Fair at Bristol Motor Speedway, which opened doors to many budding careers. The RBC Heritage PGA Golf Tournament also featured Lander students, with six of them completing week-long internships. Interestingly, five of those students are set to return in 2025, an indicator of Lander’s strong reputation in providing quality internships.
Last but not least, Lander’s Sports Sales Team shined at the National Collegiate Sports Sales Championship in Atlanta, securing a solid 12th place nationally and earning a top 5 ranking for one student among a whopping 300 participants!
For the 2023-24 academic year alone, sport management majors at Lander collectively clocked in over 1,500 hours of experiential learning through internships. This level of involvement not only equips students with practical skills but also fosters a deeper understanding of the industry. Students describe these experiences as transformative opportunities that help confirm their career aspirations, especially in sports operations and event management.
Lander University’s Sport Management Program incorporates a comprehensive array of courses, covering economics, accounting, law, entrepreneurship, facility management, marketing, and analytics. Future business professionals must also complete 43 credit hours of core business courses, establishing a well-rounded educational foundation that prepares them for their chosen areas of emphasis in the sports industry.
Looking ahead, Lander students can look forward to participating in the upcoming RBC Heritage Golf Tournament this April and NASCAR weekend at Darlington Motor Speedway. These events promise even more chances to gain practical experience and make important connections in the sports world.
