The program offers rigorous academic coursework enhanced by hands-on learning opportunities at prestigious sporting events, such as the Super Bowl and PGA tournaments. Students gain valuable insights and real-world experience through internships and competitions, setting a strong foundation for careers in sports. As Lander continues to expand its offerings and opportunities, the future looks promising for aspiring sports professionals.
Greenwood, South Carolina – Lander University has become a buzzing hub for aspiring sports professionals, with its sport management program experiencing phenomenal growth over the past three years. The number of students in the program has increased by more than three times, capturing the attention of students eager to dive into the ever-evolving world of sports.
Dr. David Zinn, an assistant professor of sport management, attributes this remarkable growth to the program’s rigorous academic coursework and enticing hands-on learning opportunities at prestigious sporting events. That’s right, Lander students aren’t just sitting in classrooms; they’re getting a taste of real sports operations!
Throughout their time in the program, students have had the chance to roll up their sleeves and volunteer at some truly high-profile events. For instance, they contributed to the excitement at Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, where five students helped with Fan Experience and Game Day Operations. This is just one of the numerous events that have allowed Lander students to shine.
In fact, over the past three years, students have volunteered at more than twenty major NCAA, Peach Belt Conference, and PGA events. This kind of experience is invaluable as they learn the ins and outs of event operations and management. They have also participated in the Breaking into Sports Job Fair at Bristol Motor Speedway, where they explored career opportunities with over 50 sports organizations!
The opportunities don’t stop there! At the RBC Heritage PGA Golf Tournament in Hilton Head, S.C., six lucky students were awarded week-long internships in 2024, thanks to their previous volunteer efforts. Even more exciting, five of these students will continue to represent Lander in 2025! This indicates a strong commitment from students who take every chance to build their resumes.
Moreover, Lander’s talented Sports Sales Team made waves at the National Collegiate Sports Sales Championship in Atlanta, securing the No. 12 ranking nationally. One determined student even clinched the impressive No. 5 spot among over 300 students from 75 universities. Talk about setting the bar high!
During the 2023-24 academic year, sport management majors completed an astonishing 1,500 hours of internship courses. This hands-on learning is essential for students, as they gain insights directly from industry professionals.
Testimonials from students further showcase the program’s impact. One student described her journey through Super Bowl LIX as transformative, highlighting the mentorship she received from people working in the industry. Another student emphasized the importance of experiential learning, recognizing how it helped confirm his career ambitions in sports operations and event management.
Looking ahead, students have even more exciting opportunities awaiting them, including participation in the RBC Heritage Golf Tournament and the NASCAR weekend at Darlington Motor Speedway in April. With endless possibilities on the horizon, Lander University’s sport management program is poised for continued growth and success.
The sport management curriculum at Lander features core business courses that cover economics, accounting, facility management, marketing, and analytics. This well-rounded education sets the stage for students as they prepare for leadership roles in the sports industry.
Graduates from the program can look forward to a range of career options in sport marketing, event management, sports communications, athletic administration, and so much more!
