Technological Upgrade for the Entrance Sign at Lander University’s Jeff May Complex
GREENWOOD, SC —
The entrance sign at Lander University’s Jeff May Complex is receiving a significant upgrade, bringing an array of new features aimed at enhancing visibility and messaging capabilities. The upgrade comes after the prior sign’s screens, which were over a decade old, displayed noticeable wear and exhibited limited functionalities.
Brian Reese, the athletic director at Lander University, stated that the enhanced signage will allow for more versatile and visually appealing messages. “The new upgrade will enable us to provide more messaging capabilities in different styles,” Reese mentioned. The older display, with its 12-year-old one-dimensional bulb panel, was only capable of displaying basic text and graphics.
Megan Varner, assistant vice president of university relations and publications, provided further insights into the technological advancements. “The new sign will incorporate industry-standard technology and bigger, video-capable panels, allowing for dynamic, full-color graphics,” Varner said, highlighting the substantial differences from the old display. The older panels had not only aged visibly but also became increasingly difficult to repair as replacement parts turned scarce.
This upgrade isn’t just about aesthetics or modern conveniences. Joe Greenthal, vice president for finance and administration, underscored the importance of the sign in terms of visibility and attracting new students. “The entrance to the facility represents a major gateway to the University, and the complex is one of our most important assets for recruitment when prospective students and families visit,” Greenthal emphasized. He also pointed out that over 20,000 vehicles pass the sign daily, making its visibility crucial.
The project was competitively bid through the State’s procurement process, which concluded with Electric City Signs, Inc., from Anderson, SC, securing the contract. Stan McManus, the Greenwood sales representative for Electric City Signs, worked alongside Lander on the new design, and fabrication of the signs took place at their Anderson facility. Notably, the sign casing required modifications to accommodate the new panels, which now stand two feet taller than the previous setup.
“We are excited for everyone to see this entrance reimagined,” Greenthal stated, expressing enthusiasm about the upgrade’s potential impact. “It will enhance the visibility of Lander University and Lander Athletics,” he added, noting that the new sign also opens up possibilities for advertising local businesses and promoting community events.
Construction is set to wrap up by next week, with an expectation that the upgraded sign will soon be fully operational to greet students, faculty, and visitors with its vibrant new display.
