Greenwood, SC – Lander University Sees Record Growth for Fall 2024

Lander University is experiencing an exciting period of growth as it kicked off the academic year 2024-25 with its largest-ever cohort of new students. The first day of classes on August 19 marked the beginning of a new chapter for the 152-year-old university, with total enrollment reaching a headcount of 4,423 students midway through the first week.

This impressive figure includes 1,471 new first-time freshmen, new first-time graduate students, and new undergraduate and graduate transfers, reflecting a 7% increase over the previous year. This year’s freshman class alone saw a growth of 6%, while the sophomore class increased by 12%. Graduate and online enrollment also saw a boost, rising by 4%.

“Lander University’s continued growth is a testament to our commitment to excellence in education and our dedication to providing students with an unparalleled experience,” said Dr. Todd Gambill, Vice President for Enrollment and Access Management.

Dr. Gambill attributes the surge in enrollment to Lander’s innovative programs that focus on workforce development, a supportive campus community, and abundant opportunities for personal and professional growth. These factors have driven students from South Carolina and beyond to choose Lander as their educational institution.

Investments in Campus Life

Lander’s growing appeal extends to its vibrant campus life, with university residence halls operating at nearly full capacity. This semester, 1,750 students are housed in the 10 residence halls, benefitting from a substantial seven-figure investment in renovations and improvements made over the summer.

Additionally, the Grier Student Center Dining Hall received a multimillion-dollar remodel that was completed just in time for the fall semester. The new facility has quickly become a favorite among students, faculty, and staff, with nearly 3,500 meals served during the first weekend of operations and 2,600 meals enjoyed on the first day of classes.

The university is not stopping there. Plans for the fall semester include the highly anticipated opening of Lander’s new outdoor pool and recreation facility. This new amenity will feature a large pool, pavilion, and expansive patios with waterside seating, further enhancing the campus experience.

“We are continually investing in our facilities and campus spaces to enrich the student experience at Lander and ensure our students’ time here is truly outstanding,” said Joe Greenthal, Vice President for Finance and Administration.

Strategic Growth and Future Plans

Since 2015, Lander University’s enrollment has grown by approximately 59.5%. This year, the administration took steps to manage this growth carefully, ensuring that faculty and resources kept pace with the increasing number of students.

According to Dr. Jim Colbert, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Lander hired 20 new faculty members in response to retirements and program expansion, with several more searches still ongoing. Dr. Colbert highlighted the importance of maintaining the quality of education and support for students while managing growth.

“We are very proud of the growth we have experienced over the last nine years, and it is the result of a lot of hard work by a lot of talented people,” he said. “Going into this academic year, we wanted to be cautious and manage that growth so that we don’t outpace our resources. This allows us to maintain the quality of education and support that our students receive.”

With clear skies and temperatures around 95°F expected, the Lander University community welcomes the new school year and looks forward to the continued development and success of its students and faculty.
