The Greenwood community is thrilled as the Lakelands Toros’ girls and boys under-19 soccer teams both clinched the South Carolina President’s Cup titles. The girls team showcased extraordinary skill and teamwork, while the boys team demonstrated relentless determination throughout the season. With both teams preparing for the upcoming regional championship in Texas, the achievements highlight their bond as teammates and the support of the local community.
Greenwood is buzzing with excitement as the Lakelands Toros’ 2009/10 girls and boys under-19 soccer teams both secured the prestigious South Carolina President’s Cup titles. What a fantastic achievement for these young athletes!
The girls under-19 team, guided by their dedicated coach, Jonathan Hughes, showcased exceptional talent and teamwork throughout the season. This isn’t their first rodeo, as they previously clinched the state championship last year. Their journey this season was marked by determination and skill, and their efforts certainly paid off.
The girls celebrated their latest triumph with the trophy held high alongside Coach Hughes. The team’s roster shines with talent from four local high schools: Greenwood, Emerald, Ninety Six, and Westview Middle School, creating a vibrant mix of young athletes eager to prove their prowess on the field.
This season, the girls team earned a bye to the state semifinal after dominating their region during the regular season. In the semi-final match, they put on a powerful performance, winning 2-0 against their opponents. The goals came from none other than Alexis Powell and Samantha Rodgers, further fortifying their reputation as a formidable force in the league.
Coach Hughes, who is in his third season coaching the club and also heads the Emerald girls’ soccer team, noted the incredible talent within the squad, which helped them navigate through tough moments during the season. Their resilience shone particularly bright when it mattered most, proving they can rise to any occasion!
As for the boys under-19 squad, they’re riding high with their own success story this season! Under the guidance of Coach Brian Vahjen, the boys kicked off their season in style with a staggering 10-0 victory. Their momentum didn’t stop there – they later claimed triumph in a tournament in Asheville. With a regular-season record of 6-1, they demonstrated their might and skill throughout the matches.
Seeded No. 3 in the state tournament, the boys navigated their way successfully through both the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, showcasing their determination and competitive spirit. In the highly anticipated final match, the boys fought tooth and nail, bringing home a well-deserved 1-0 victory! Their outstanding performance capped off an exhilarating season.
Coach Vahjen has praised the team’s intensity during practice and emphasized the special dynamic that exists among the players. It’s this strong bond and shared passion that have propelled them to such remarkable heights.
