Join the Fun: Lake Greenwood Cleanup Event Happening Soon!

Hey there, Greenwood! Are you ready to roll up your sleeves and make a difference? This Saturday, March 8, from 9 a.m. to noon, it’s time to hit the beautiful shores of Lake Greenwood for a big cleanup event! The spotlight is on keeping our lovely community clean as Keep Greenwood County Beautiful teams up with Keep Laurens County Beautiful for an event that’s not just rewarding, but also tons of fun!

Last Year Was a Huge Success!

In case you don’t already know, last year’s cleanup was an amazing affair, with over 300 enthusiastic volunteers coming together to gather up hundreds of bags of trash. Just think about that for a moment – a whole sea of folks united for a common cause! And guess what? All volunteers this year will be rewarded with a stylish T-shirt and a delicious lunch to fuel their efforts. Who says saving the environment can’t be fun?

Teaching the Next Generation

Now, let’s talk about the great initiatives behind this event. Keep Greenwood County Beautiful Education, which was founded in January 2022, is really stepping up its game. Driven by the idea that environmental education is crucial, they aim to enlighten young minds about the real impact of littering and how they can take care of our planet. With a dedicated team led by coordinators like Johnathan Graves from Greenwood County School District 50, they’re on a mission!

The volunteer crew behind KGCB Education isn’t massive, fluctuating between one and eight individuals at any time, but they’re mighty in their commitment. Their focus is on the students and families in Greenwood County, working hand-in-hand with local schools to spread the word about recycling, composting, and just being responsible stewards of the environment.

A Commitment to Recognition

And it seems like they’re doing something right! Recently, recipients of the Environmental Education Difference Maker Award have included some inspiring local heroes. Notable achievements include creating stunning pollinator gardens and cool recycling projects that show just how creative and devoted these community members are!

Cleanup Projects Galore

KGCB Education doesn’t stop with just the cleanup day. They partner with awesome groups such as Palmetto Pride and Take Action SC to bring environmental education right into the classrooms. It’s not uncommon for volunteers to lead litter sweeps on campuses, bringing awareness to students by showing them the effects of litter firsthand. Plus, they hand out tree seedlings and even facilitate hands-on projects, like planting paper white flowers, to keep things engaging!

Mark Those Calendars for April!

And don’t forget, as April approaches, we’ll be diving into Earth Month with a slew of exciting activities and cleanup sessions. It’s a fantastic time to get involved, learn more about our planet, and even have a little fun while giving back!

How to Get Involved

Interested in joining the Lake Greenwood cleanup party? You can easily sign up through the @keeplaurenscountybeautiful Facebook page, or find information at designated on-site locations. Come on out, make new friends, and help restore the beauty of Lake Greenwood!

Honors for Local Heroes

Need more inspiration? Let’s give a shout-out to local leaders like Amber Nappier, who has been an outstanding litter prevention coordinator! She’s worked tirelessly on various cleanup events throughout the county alongside KGCB. Plus, there’s an annual meeting where community members are acknowledged for their incredible efforts to maintain a litter-free environment.

So gear up, spread the word, and let’s make a splash on March 8 at Lake Greenwood. Together, we can ensure a cleaner, greener tomorrow!
