Newberry Says Goodbye to a Legend: Jim Lander Passes Away at 90

In the cozy town of Newberry, South Carolina, a heartfelt silence fills the air as the community mourns the passing of James “Jim” Lander, a beloved public servant and veteran who left an indelible mark on both local and state history. Jim peacefully departed this world at the age of 90 at his home in Newberry, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and memories.

A Life of Service and Dedication

Jim Lander wasn’t just a name in Newberry County; he was a figure of respect and admiration. Born in 1930 in Abbeville, South Carolina to Anne Louise Cheatham Lander and William Jones Lander, Jim went on to have an impressive career that spanned decades. After graduating from Abbeville High School, he pursued higher education at both N.C. State University and Erskine College but ultimately received his degree from Lander University in 1986.

Jim’s commitment to serving his country began early; he enlisted in the S.C. National Guard in January of 1948, becoming a commissioned officer shortly afterward. His service took him across the globe, with active duty in Korea and Vietnam from 1966 to 1971. By the end of his career, he retired as chief of staff of the S.C. Army National Guard on October 31, 1985, decorated with numerous awards, including the prestigious Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star.

Political Career and Community Involvement

Jim Lander’s political career began when he was elected to the South Carolina Senate in 1992, serving until 1999. He later became the 40th Comptroller General of South Carolina, a position he held until 2003. Over the years, he was involved with a wide range of organizations dedicated to improving the lives of those in his community. His work with the Newberry Boy Scout District, Rotary Club, Exchange Club, and various local boards highlighted his commitment to service.

Additionally, he devoted time to the Newberry County Literacy Council and was actively involved in drug and alcohol abuse prevention efforts. His passion for helping others was further shown through his role with the Newberry County Retired Seniors Volunteer Program, where he lent a hand with Meals on Wheels. This genuine dedication to community service earned him numerous accolades and respect from his peers.

Honors and Legacy

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Jim was honored with the Order of the Palmetto in 1985, one of South Carolina’s highest civilian honors. Friends and colleagues remember him fondly, reflecting on his strong sense of leadership and patriotism.

Family and Personal Life

Jim Lander shared a wonderful life with his wife, Jolene Smith Lander, to whom he was married for an impressive 68 years. Together, they raised five loving children—Britt Snelling, Leslie Orr, Gail Floyd, Jeannie Brehmer, and LTC (Ret) David Lander. His legacy doesn’t stop there, as Jim was also blessed with grandchildren whom he helped nurture and care for through the years.

Sadly, he was predeceased by his daughters, Terrie Lander Duffy and Vickie Lander Beckham, which cast a shadow over his legacy. However, the love and warmth Jim shared with those around him will continue to resonate in the hearts of many.
