Jamare Benjamin Arrested for Multiple Charges in Richland County

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — A football player from South Carolina State University was arrested early Wednesday morning, facing several serious charges. Jamare Benjamin, a redshirt junior and defensive back for the Bulldogs, is now dealing with legal issues that could impact his collegiate career.

What Happened?

On October 30th, shortly after midnight, Richland County deputies spotted a speeding Chevy sedan on Bluff Road. The vehicle was reportedly failing to maintain its lane. In response, a deputy initiated a traffic stop. During the stop, Benjamin, who was identified as the driver, allegedly threw a paper bag out of the car window before pulling over. The bag was later discovered to contain illegal items.

What Were the Charges?

Following the traffic stop, deputies found open liquor containers and narcotics inside Benjamin’s vehicle. The sheriff’s department has charged him with:

  • Two counts of possession of controlled substance schedule II
  • Transport of alcoholic beverages in a motor vehicle with a broken seal
  • DUI 1st degree
  • Simple possession of marijuana

Where Did This Occur?

This incident took place in Richland County, specifically on Bluff Road. This location is not far from campus, raising concerns about the implications for Benjamin’s academic and athletic responsibilities.

When Did This Occur?

The arrest occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, October 30, 2023. The timing raises further questions about the driver’s judgment and readiness for the responsibilities of a college athlete.

Why Is This Relevant?

Benjamin is known for his role as a key player for the Bulldogs’ football team. His arrest could not only affect his position on the team but may also lead to disciplinary actions from the university. The college football season is ongoing, and many are watching how this situation will unfold in the coming days.

Next Steps for Benjamin

Following his arrest, Benjamin’s future on the football team and his academic standing could be at stake. South Carolina State University has yet to issue a public statement regarding his legal situation. As this story develops, the potential consequences for Benjamin, both legally and within the university, remain uncertain.

This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges student-athletes sometimes face, balancing their responsibilities both on and off the field. Further developments in this case are likely to attract attention from both the media and the university community.
