Stay safe, Upstate! As Hurricane Helene churns its way northward, the National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for the Upstate counties of Greenwood, Laurens, and Union. The watch remains in effect until 8 a.m. Friday.
A tornado watch basically means that conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes. This is not to be confused with a tornado warning, which indicates that a tornado has already been spotted by radar or weather observers.
The day is set to bring a mix of weather events. In the morning, expect tropical storm conditions with showers, a few thundershowers, and gusty winds. These conditions are likely to be pretty intense. Winds could range from 25 to 35 mph, so make sure everything in your yard is secure, and it might be a good idea to stay indoors!
The rain chances are at a solid 100% for the morning, so keep those umbrellas handy. Fortunately, by the afternoon, the skies should clear up a bit, leading to partly cloudy conditions and a high of 78°F.
If you have evening plans, you should be in the clear&mash;literally! The skies are expected to be clear with temperatures dropping to a comfortable low of 62°F. The winds will also calm down, dropping to about 5 to 10 mph
It’s always a good idea to stay informed during unpredictable weather events like this. Keep an ear out for local weather updates and advisories. If you’re tech-savvy, set up weather alerts on your phone so you get instant updates on any changes.
