As sunshine breaks through the vibrant skies of Abbeville County, residents are busy picking up the pieces after the recent bout with Hurricane Helene. It’s a comforting change from the stormy chaos as the community works together to restore normalcy. Today, you’ll find the area basking under abundant sunshine with temperatures climbing to a very warm 82°F. No doubt, the clear sky and warm weather are a welcome relief to everyone putting in hard work in the recovery process.
On the ground, power restoration is the name of the game. Two main electrical companies are stepping up efforts to ensure that lights are back on for everyone affected. There’s encouraging news today as they expect to complete power restoration by late tonight. According to one of these companies, Duke Energy, only two active outages remain, leaving just four customers still in the dark within the county. Given that the company serves 2,174 customers in Abbeville, this is a significant achievement!
Since Helene unleashed its fury, Duke Energy has tirelessly worked to restore power to over 3.1 million customers across the Carolinas, Florida, and the Midwest. It’s incredible to see such feats accomplished in such a short period.
Over in South Carolina, Dominion Energy isn’t far behind. They have projected power restoration to nearly 100% of impacted customers, including those in Aiken, Edgefield, and McCormick counties, by 11 p.m. They’ve reported restoring electricity to more than 445,000 customers since recovery efforts commenced.
Meanwhile, Little River Electric Cooperative is making substantial headway as well. As of this afternoon, they had managed to restore power to 87% of their customers, as interim general manager Chad Stone updated in a heartfelt message on their Facebook page. Currently, they report 275 outages, with the largest clusters distributed around Calhoun Falls, Ware Shoals, and near Highway 201, north of the city. Many smaller pockets of outages involve 2-10 customer clusters still without power.
Little River is hopeful, aiming to hit a 95% power restoration milestone by the end of the week. This progress raises hopes for many families eager to get back to their day-to-day routines under the bright South Carolina sun.
As we look to the immediate future, the forecast carries more clear skies and a warm evening with lows around 61°F, coupled with gentle WSW winds at 5 to 10 mph. It’s the perfect atmosphere for a resilient community on the road to recovery. Whether it’s repairing damages, restoring services, or simply supporting each other, Abbeville County is shining brighter every day.
Do share any news tips or stories with us as we navigate through this recovery journey. And remember, it’s crucial to stay updated with reliable resources and never hesitate to lend a helping hand to neighbors in need.
