Hurricane Helene’s Aftermath: Abbeville County Makes Significant Progress in Restoration Efforts

Hurricane Helene’s Aftermath: Abbeville County’s Restoration Progress

Good day from Abbeville County! Today, we find ourselves bathed in plentiful sunshine with a high of 72°F and those lovely light, variable winds keeping things calm. As the sun sets, clear skies will blanket our area and temperatures will drop to a refreshing 45°F, perfect for stargazing or just enjoying a peaceful evening walk.

Cleaning Up After Hurricane Helene

The community spirit in Abbeville is shining bright, much like today’s beautiful sky, as the cleanup from Hurricane Helene continues. If you happen to stroll down Greenville Street, you’ll see folks rolling up their sleeves, working hard to clear the debris in front of the Abbeville County School District office. It’s a bustling scene full of determination and resilience.

Updates on Power Restoration

Great news on the power restoration front, everyone! Two of our dedicated electrical companies have been tirelessly working, and it looks like we’ll start to see the light at the end of the tunnel—literally! By late today, Abbeville County could see a major breakthrough in having our power fully restored. As of midday, there were only two active outages reported by Duke Energy, affecting a mere four customers out of the 2,174 they serve here. Full restoration is on track by 11:45 p.m. tonight.

Across the State

Statewide, our friends at Dominion Energy have been just as busy, bringing power back to almost all of their affected South Carolina customers, which includes Aiken, Edgefield, and McCormick counties. Since the recovery started, Dominion has flipped the switch back on for over 445,000 customers. For those waiting patiently, nearly 100% restoration is predicted by 11 p.m

Local Cooperative Efforts

Here at the local level, the Little River Electric Cooperative is also making headway. This afternoon, they reported around 275 power outages. The largest groups of outages, affecting between 11 and 100 customers, are notably around Calhoun Falls, Ware Shoals, and the northward areas along Highway 201. The interim general manager, Chad Stone, shared on social media that they have managed to restore power to 87% of customers and are hopeful to reach up to 95% by the end of this week.

Community Spirit and Resilience

It’s days like this that remind us of the strength and cooperation that define our communities. As we continue with the recovery and support each other, every small step counts. Whether it’s clearing debris, checking in on neighbors, or lending a hand to those still without power, each act of kindness makes a big difference.

Keep your news tips and story ideas rolling in, and if you hit any snags with your accounts or subscriptions, most of these issues can be resolved quickly. Looking Ahead

As Abbeville County continues to recover and rebuild, the forecast of sunny days and clear nights fills us with hope and optimism.
