Rock Hill and Chester Triumph at Inaugural High School Dual-Team Wrestling Championships

In a night filled with excitement and athletic prowess, Rock Hill and Chester emerged victorious at the inaugural High School Dual-Team Wrestling Championships held at Dreher High School in Columbia, South Carolina. The atmosphere was electric, with families and friends cheering for their local heroes as they battled it out on the mat.

Rock Hill Girls Clinch Championship Title

The Rock Hill girls wrestling team made history by winning the very first girls wrestling dual-team state championship, defeating Greenwood with a score of 46-36. This victory was not just a trophy; it symbolized determination, teamwork, and the growing recognition of girls wrestling in South Carolina.

The championship featured a dynamic 16-team bracket, showcasing the talents of young female wrestlers from across the state. It is a remarkable achievement, especially considering that girls wrestling has only been a sanctioned sport by the S.C. High School League for three years. Rock Hill had already made waves in previous seasons by winning individual titles but claimed this team accomplishment with even more heart and pride.

As the matches unfolded, Rock Hill quickly established a solid lead of 40-24. However, tension ramped up as Greenwood’s Angelique Garcia Rosalies and Alanise Ricardo turned the tide temporarily by winning their bouts, forcing a crucial final match. All eyes were on Jenger Rhoades, who stepped up to pin Greenwood’s Gabby Palmore at 120 pounds, securing the title for Rock Hill in a thrilling encounter.

Other standout performers for Rock Hill included Maggie Cogar at 130 pounds, Braylon Adams at 135, Alicyah Thomas at 155, and several others who contributed to the team’s success. The atmosphere was charged with pride and joy as the Rock Hill girls celebrated their historic achievement together.

Chester Boys Celebrate their First State Title

Class 2A title with an impressive 65-17 win over Buford. It was a monumental day for the Chester Cyclones, who secured their first state title in the program’s history in what was described as a dominant postseason performance.

Ranked third heading into the championship, Chester showed they were a force to be reckoned with by defeating defending champion Chesnee and handing the top-ranked Liberty its first loss of the season. This relentless drive carried them through to the championship match, where they showcased their wrestling prowess.

Chester began the match against Buford with two victories secured by forfeit. The Cyclones didn’t stop there; they continued their winning streak with notable pins from wrestlers like Andre Hall, Raheem Rambert, Jacoby Starks Wright, and others who displayed incredible skill and teamwork. Their overall season record stands at an impressive 34-4, underlining the strength and depth of the program.

The Future of Wrestling in South Carolina

Notably, girls wrestling now joins boys volleyball and girls lacrosse as one of the newer sanctioned sports under the S.C. High School League. It has been recognized that the NCAA has also recently voted to add women’s wrestling to its championship sports, reflecting a promising future for female wrestlers at both high school and collegiate levels.

The Rock Hill and Chester victories embody a bright future and the growing momentum of wrestling in South Carolina. With each passing season, more young athletes are finding their place on the mat, paving the way for an inclusive sports culture where talent truly shines, regardless of gender.
