Hey there, Greenwood residents! We’ve got some crucial updates for you regarding the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, especially if you’re seeking assistance during these times. Our focus today is on help, hope, and halting the hardships many have experienced.
If you’re stepping out today, don’t forget your umbrella because it’s going to be a cloudy day with periods of rain. Temperatures are expected to hit a high of 65°F with southern winds blowing at 5 to 10 mph. There’s a whopping 90% chance of rain today, so plan outdoor activities accordingly!
The night doesn’t promise much reprieve either. With a low around 58°F and SSW winds speeding up to 10-15 mph, brace yourself for heavy showers. A downpour of 1 to 2 inches is expected. The rain might get quite heavy, so stay safe and dry indoors!
Following the impact of Hurricane Helene, the much-awaited in-person assistance from FEMA has officially landed. Their Disaster Recovery Center has opened in Greenwood County at United Way of the Lakelands, 929 Phoenix St. This is your opportunity to get hands-on help if you’ve been affected.
This Disaster Recovery Center is open from December 10 to December 14 and then from December 16 to 20, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. It will take a closure break on December 15. FEMA’s Gabriel Gonzalez is in town, bringing vital aid programs for immediate needs such as transitional sheltering assistance, fuel, baby formula, and medical necessities like insulin.
Aside from individual help, FEMA is providing public assistance programs. These are aimed at helping with debris removal and public facility repairs. Gov. Henry McMaster had requested an Expedited Major Presidential Disaster Declaration, and this move has made it possible for residents to access direct financial assistance.
Worried about the deadline? Gonzalez noted that there’s time until January 7 to get your applications in. If you can’t make it by then due to legit reasons like hospitalization or military deployment, you might still have a chance for late submission with proper documentation.
Basically, if you’ve faced any damage, give it a shot! Whether your insurance wasn’t enough or you’re just uncertain, applying could see you getting aid. Did you know that a FEMA grant for a single household could be as high as $42,500?
At the Disaster Recovery Center, expect a hassle-free, one-stop-shop experience. Experts will guide you through from start to finish, including applications and appeals. There’s also bilingual assistance if needed.
For those who can’t make it to the center, reach out via:
South Carolina has been granted additional assistance, so make sure you’re in the loop! In Greenwood County alone, there have been 19,200 valid applications, and approximately $12 million in aid has already been approved.
So, stay safe and dry today, and remember, help is at hand for rebuilding stronger for tomorrow!
