As the sun peeks through a mix of clouds over Greenville today, the weather seems to mirror the warm and sunny path that Tracy Pedigo has paved in his healthcare career. With temperatures soaring to a delightful 80°F and a gentle SSW breeze guiding at 5 to 10 mph, it’s a day that invites inspiration and reflection. For Pedigo, the assistant director of the nurse anesthesia program at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville, it’s also a perfect backdrop for recounting the journey of a professional life well spent.
Tracy Pedigo’s career story is as inspiring as the balmy weather today. His journey into the healthcare world began two decades ago at Piedmont Technical College (PTC). Originally from Tennessee, Pedigo ventured into South Carolina for what he thought was a brief detour to handle some prerequisites. Life, however, had other, much grander plans for him.
With no intention of laying down roots, he unexpectedly met his future wife, Sharon. This twist of fate set him on a trajectory that saw him graduating from PTC in 1995 with an Associate in Applied Science degree in respiratory care—a choice that would unknowingly shape his future.
Like the weather easing from a warm day to a cooler 59°F night with light variable winds, Pedigo’s professional life was marked by seamless transitions. He started a family and delved into respiratory therapy, a decision that made economic sense for his growing family’s needs.
As is often the case with healthcare professionals, Pedigo didn’t stop with his foundational associate degree. He continually built upon it with additional qualifications, eventually acquiring a Doctor of Nursing Practice to refine his management and leadership skills. During nursing school, an opportune suggestion nudged him towards nurse anesthesia, a specialty in which he has excelled.
Pedigo’s career wasn’t isolated to the South Carolina borders. Passionate about making a broader impact, he participated in medical missions to Guatemala and Honduras. Here, his skills came to life in service to others—a calling he wholeheartedly embraced.
In recognition of his dedication and talent, Pedigo was honored as the Registered Nurse of the Year in 2001 by Self Regional Healthcare. His résumé burgeoned with esteemed roles across various hospital systems, peaking when the USC School of Medicine opportunity presented itself, pulling him towards academia.
Pedigo credits PTC as the cornerstone of a rewarding career, one rich with friendships and professional connections that have endured over the years. So much so, that it inspired a familial legacy. His daughter, Anna Brooke Pedigo Parker, also chose the healthcare path at PTC, graduating with her associate degree in nursing.
Looking at his personal and professional journey, Pedigo’s story is a testament to how a foundation laid at a technical college can blossom into an astounding healthcare career. He stands ready to empower a new generation of students, eager to pass on what he has learned.
As Greenville moves into the evening with a gentle cooling, contemplating the achievements and ambitions of people like Pedigo feels both comforting and motivating. Healthcare careers may start with an associate degree, but where they can lead—and the lives they can change—is limitless, a sentiment as promising as today’s inviting weather.
