Selina Goodwin-Hay combines her culinary expertise and passion for hospitality to create a unique experience. With six themed rooms and a mission to empower the community, HayGood Manor blends history and modern hospitality, ensuring guests feel right at home. This landmark establishment marks a significant milestone in the town’s history.
Abbeville, a charming town steeped in history, has recently made headlines with the opening of HayGood Manor, the first-ever bed and breakfast established by an African American woman in one of its historic residences. Selina Goodwin-Hay has combined her background in both corporate America and the culinary world to create this delightful space that reflects her passion for hospitality and community.
Before embarking on this exciting new venture, Goodwin-Hay was not a stranger to the food scene. Her career began in New York, where she showcased her skills as both a restaurant owner and an executive chef. Her love for hospitality was intertwined with her appreciation for culture and cuisine, paving the way for a new chapter in her life.
A trip to Martha’s Vineyard inspired her dream of running a bed and breakfast, igniting the spark of creativity that would lead her to search for the perfect historic home. She sought a property that would embody her vision, particularly one with a wraparound porch—a hallmark of traditional Southern charm. After much searching, she found HayGood Manor, a lovely building dating back to 1883 and officially recognized as a Historic Registry Site 22.
Opening a new business in such a prestigious, historic home did not come without its challenges. Goodwin-Hay faced both local skepticism and scrutiny from within her community as she stood as the first African American woman to take on this endeavor. However, rather than being discouraged, she set her sights on building positive relationships and establishing her place within Abbeville’s rich tapestry.
Every room in HayGood Manor is more than just a place to stay; it tells a tale that intertwines Goodwin-Hay’s life journey with the history of the house itself. The manor features six uniquely themed bedrooms, each with its distinct personality—the Greenville Room, Charleston Room, and Abbeville Room, among others. Guests can also enjoy additional communal spaces like a men’s parlor room, a women’s sitting room, a cozy den, and a grand dining room adorned with ten fireplaces that add a touch of warmth to the atmosphere.
Goodwin-Hay believes in giving back to the community that welcomed her. In a commendable partnership with the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Center, she aims to create job opportunities for individuals with visible and non-visible disabilities and rehabilitated felons. This progressive approach underscores HayGood Manor’s mission to be a space for growth and empowerment, alongside providing traditional bed and breakfast experiences.
The HayGood Manor promises a memorable stay characterized by warmth and authenticity. Guests are encouraged to indulge in intimate dining experiences, either in their room or communal dining areas. For those staying longer, there’s an opportunity to learn about the vibrant history of local cuisine, offering a deep dive into the culinary heritage of the area.
Goodwin-Hay perfectly encapsulates HayGood Manor using three defining words: “Elegant, joyful, and authentic.” This modern bed and breakfast seamlessly combines comfort with impeccable hospitality to ensure that each guest feels right at home from the moment they step inside.
So, whether you’re a local looking for a quick getaway or a traveler eager to explore the rich history of Abbeville, HayGood Manor is the place to be. The opening of this historic bed and breakfast not only marks a significant milestone but also sets the stage for a flourishing community spirit. Come experience the blend of history, hospitality, and heart at HayGood Manor!
