Greenwood, SC – For as long as she can remember, Abby Ellenberg has been passionate about baking. This lifelong dream is now a reality with the opening of The Bakery on Main in Uptown Greenwood at 324 Main St., Suite B.
Ellenberg’s love for baking began in her mother’s kitchen, where she often joined her family in creating homemade treats. By the age of 10, she and her family were selling homemade breads at local farmers markets. Over time, their array of offerings expanded to include irresistible cinnamon rolls and other delightful baked goods.
Driven by her childhood dream of owning a bakery, Ellenberg pursued studies in business at Piedmont Technical College to prepare herself for entrepreneurship. After outgrowing their original farm stand, she realized it was time for a substantial change. “I knew it was what I wanted to do,” Ellenberg explained. “I went to Piedmont Tech and studied business knowing that I wanted to open a business one day.”
As demand for Ellenberg’s breads grew, it became evident that a larger space was necessary. She opened her first bakery on February 14, 2020, on Washington Street in Abbeville. Named Daily Bread Bakery, it was a tribute to her upbringing in a large family where fresh bread was a staple made daily.
This year, Ellenberg made the decision to move her flourishing bakery from its 700-square-foot space in Abbeville to a more spacious location in Uptown Greenwood. “We looked and looked for a long time,” she said. “We wanted something bigger, where we could have seating, more space for a large kitchen, and a larger storefront.”
The search ended when she discovered 324 Main St., Suite B. Captivated by its industrial brick style and original hardwood floors, Ellenberg knew it was the perfect spot. “When we walked in, we were like this is perfect,” she recalled.
Although the move was bittersweet, Ellenberg is overjoyed to be back in Greenwood, where she grew up. In the process of relocating, she also rebranded her business to match the new setting. Originally called “The Bakery” because it was the only bakery on the Abbeville square, it is now aptly named The Bakery on Main to reflect its new location on Main Street.
The transition has been nothing short of fantastic, according to Ellenberg. “We’ve been crazy busy, selling out pretty much every day,” she shared. Many of her customers from Abbeville were originally from Greenwood and are thrilled to have The Bakery on Main closer to home. “It’s kind of like we came to them,” Ellenberg added.
The Bakery on Main had a soft opening on August 16 and officially opened its doors on August 17. The bakery prides itself on handcrafted items made with natural and simple ingredients. Even though it is not a nut-free environment, they take every precaution to avoid cross-contamination.
Ellenberg aims to create a welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels valued and loved. Inspired by her own experiences of feeling unwelcome in businesses during high school, she aspires to ensure that every customer feels at home. “We want people to be able to come in and sit down and just have a place to come and enjoy,” she said.
Looking ahead, Ellenberg’s focus remains on settling into the new location and continuously growing her business.
