Greenwood Touchdown Club Celebrates Young Athletes and Football Legends

Greenwood: A Celebration of Young Talents and Football Legacy

Greenwood played host to a memorable meeting of the Greenwood Touchdown Club on a crisp Monday evening. The spotlight was on the region’s burgeoning young athletes and seasoned stars who have immortalized the spirit of football in the hearts of many. The event was the last gathering before the eagerly anticipated All-Lakelands Banquet set for November 25th, and it certainly did not disappoint.

With the weather treating locals to a pleasant start with sunshine, Monday unfolded perfectly as members of the community came together to honor the achievements of local football players. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement, camaraderie, and pride as the club celebrated the starring performances and promising futures of its young athletes.

The Stars of Greenwood

On the offensive forefront, two athletes were honored as players of the week: Robert Stevens from Greenwood, and Karson Norman from Abbeville. Stevens, playing the pivotal role of center, showcased exceptional skills that led his team to victory in their Week 10 match. His impressive statistics for the season, including 37 knockdowns and a remarkable grade of 87%, have earned him well-deserved accolades.

On the other hand, Karson Norman was all about explosive footwork and determination in his performance against Dixie, racking up an astonishing five touchdowns and totaling 167 all-purpose yards. With 16 touchdowns by the end of the regular season, he’s been a tour de force for his team.

Not to be outdone on defense, Greenwood’s Ahmad Scott and JT Harling drew applause for their outstanding play against Hillcrest, recording critical tackles and sacks. Scott, with his nine tackles and one-and-a-half sacks, stood shoulder to shoulder with Harling, who also left an indelible mark with seven tackles and numerous quarterback pressures.

A New Generation and Veteran Wisdom

In addition to the players of the week, the Lakelands Fellowship of Christian Athletes recognized two standout young athletes: Ware Shoals’ Brayden Madden and Saluda’s Grant Gentry. These honors reflect their contributions both on and off the field, embodying the true spirit of teamwork and community.

The event wasn’t just about the new generation but also celebrated the football veterans who paved the way. Former Abbeville Panthers Leomont Evans and Kennan Gilchrist, whose numbers have been retired in honor, took the platform to speak about their journeys from local stars to professional athletes.

Their speeches were filled with inspiration and humility as they reflected on their roots. Evans, who shined at Clemson and later with the Washington Commanders, underscored the importance of community support and personal growth. “I had dreams and ambitions, a lot of people didn’t believe in me,” he shared, expressing gratitude for those who supported him in his formative years.

Meanwhile, Gilchrist emphasized the necessity of believing in oneself in pursuit of success, drawing from his unconventional journey into football. He also reminded the young stars that life goes beyond the gridiron. “If football ends today, can I still have a lifestyle that I want?” he asked, encouraging contemplation about life beyond sports.

A Touch of Humor and Nostalgia

As the evening wrapped up, the stories told by Evans and Gilchrist added a touch of humor. Evans fondly revisited his memorable play against South Carolina’s Steve Taneyhill, a highlight etched in his career. Gilchrist equally relished narrating his big play at Neyland Stadium, painting a picture of triumph amidst a sea of silence from opposing fans.

All involved left the Greenwood Touchdown Club meeting enriched, inspired, and ready for more football magic. As the banquet date approaches, the community can only anticipate another fulfilling celebration of sports, talent, and togetherness.
