Good morning, everyone from the heart of Greenwood! When I tell you this week’s weather has thrown us a curveball, I’m not exaggerating. Picture this: we geared up, expecting a strong wind of about 40-60 mph on the morning of September 27, but Mother Nature had other plans. When I say the winds ramped up close to 70 mph, I really mean it! And believe it or not, some even say they saw twisters joining the party! If you’re like me, living by the lake, it’s a good chance your yard looks like a mess of tree branches today.
Fast forward to today, September 28, and let’s talk about what we’ve seen—or in many cases, haven’t seen. Traveling through town, one can’t help but wonder where all the emergency services are? With the winds causing a real mess on our roads, folks were looking out for those Duke trucks and road crews to help get things moving again. Guess what? Nada! Seeing none only highlighted how unprepared we were, not to mention the frustrations piling up at every turn.
Speaking of frustrations, if you’re heading out to find some emergency supplies like gas or ice, you might want to pack some patience first. The need for these necessities is high and the supply, well, isn’t meeting it. It can get incredibly disheartening when those lines stretch out way too long. And when tempers flare, courteous behaviors are thrown by the wayside. Why, oh why, wasn’t there more guidance or a heads-up on what to expect?
If there’s one thing we can all take from this ordeal, it’s that charity begins at home. South Carolina, let’s be real; this isn’t Florida. We’re not accustomed to hurricanes paying us visits as frequently or as fiercely. Yet here we are, trying to figure things out as we go. Our leadership needs to step up and provide clear instructions and preparations for such weather challenges. Shame on us for not having systems in place when we needed them the most!
Friends from the Mississippi Gulf Coast knew all too well the value of readiness, reminding us how essential it is to have a game plan. So, listen up, Greenwood—let’s use this as our wake-up call! We should be well-prepared should another disaster head our way, whether it’s another crazy storm unraveling like this one or something else entirely.
Until we have electricity, cell service, or even ice, let’s band together and help one another. That’s what community is all about. Here’s hoping for brighter days ahead, perhaps like the upcoming weather predictions of sunny to partly cloudy with highs around 77°F. Keep those spirits high, friends!
