The Board of Trustees is collaborating with the South Carolina School Board Association, gathering community insights through focus groups and surveys to inform their search. Applications are open until April 14, with the aim of announcing a new leader by late May. Strong communication skills, a commitment to academic excellence, and a focus on mental wellness are key qualities sought in the candidate.
In the cozy town of Greenwood, the local school district is embarking on an exciting new chapter as it searches for a successor to current superintendent Dr. Steve Glenn, who recently announced his retirement effective June 30, 2025. The Greenwood School District 50 Board of Trustees has swiftly taken action and, on March 17, made the unanimous decision to team up with the South Carolina School Board Association (SCSBA) to assist in this important search.
To kick off this process, Gene Moore, a consultant from the SCSBA, has been leading discussions with various stakeholders to gather feedback on the qualities they want to see in the new superintendent. On a recent Wednesday evening, six focus groups met to discuss their hopes and priorities. Participants included a diverse mix of school principals, district office staff, community leaders, students, teachers and staff, along with parents. It’s a great way for everyone to voice their opinions and ensure the search aligns with community expectations.
As the search moves ahead, an anonymous online survey has also been launched, which as of Wednesday morning, attracted a whopping 690 responses from community members eager to share their thoughts. Moore has promised that the search process will not only focus locally but will also reach out regionally and nationally to attract the best candidates. Applications for the superintendent position are open until April 14.
Once the application period closes, the Board of Trustees will huddle in a closed executive session on April 21 to review the applications. From there, they plan to narrow the field to a more manageable six to nine semifinalists. Exciting times lie ahead as interviews with these semifinalists are slated to occur over two to three days in May. In keeping with transparency, the district must publicly disclose at least three finalists in accordance with the South Carolina Freedom of Information Act. The objective is to officially introduce their new leader by late May, with an anticipated start date of July 1.
During the focus group discussions, several key traits emerged as must-haves for the new superintendent. Strong communication skills, an unwavering commitment to academic excellence, and solid experience in leading multiple districts topped the list. Moreover, participants expressed the necessity for speedy decision-making, a solid grasp of labor laws, and a focus on mental wellness for both students and staff. Diversity and the support of special education programs were also highlighted as critical components for the next district leader’s focus.
In addition to the superintendent search, the district is also making some changes to its gifted and talented programs. During the latest board meeting, it was announced that the instruction model will transition to a more standardized approach. For third to fifth graders, gifted instruction time will be significantly boosted from 125 to a hearty 225 minutes per week, fully integrated into their regular school day. These improvements are designed to enhance the educational experience for gifted students, ensuring they receive the support they need to thrive.
As the district prepares for the upcoming 2025-26 school year, financial challenges loom large due to factors such as the expiration of federal funding and a decline in enrollment. Assistant Superintendent for Business, Rodney Smith, pointed out the necessity to explore cost-cutting strategies while continuing to offer valuable support to students. This balancing act will be crucial as the district navigates through these upcoming changes.
Throughout this search and transition period, Board Chairperson Clay Sprouse has expressed gratitude to community participants for their active engagement, highlighting how vital it is to involve everyone in shaping the future of education in Greenwood.
