Greenwood, SC: Get Excited for a Brazilian Carnival Experience

Sunshine and clouds are expected to mix today with a high of around 80°F, and winds from the northeast at 10 to 15 mph. Tonight will be cloudy with lows of 64°F and winds continuing at 5 to 10 mph, according to the latest weather forecast updated at 6:00 am this morning.

Expect bright colors, flamboyant feathers, and a Brazilian flair at the upcoming 2025 Mid-Winter Ball. The anticipated event, named “Rio Baile De Self,” organized by Self Regional Healthcare, will take place on Saturday, February 22, at the James Medford Family Event Center at Piedmont Technical College.

Though the venue might be just a short drive for most, attendees will instantly feel transported to a Brazilian extravaganza. The history of the Brazilian Carnival dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries when Portuguese colonists brought the festival to the country. Today, Brazilian street carnivals are known as the largest in the world, attracting around 2 million people each day.

Ball Chairs Davis Renee Migdalas and Dr. Lindsay Snider are working diligently to recreate a night of Carnival that will seduce your love of culture and give you a rich glimpse into Brazilian traditions. “We want the ball attendees to feel like they have stepped into the streets of Brazil when they come inside. We want them to forget they are in Greenwood and feel surrounded by the sounds, smells, and colors of a true Brazilian Carnival,” said Migdalas.

“This night is all about color, music, expression, and excitement. While giving to a great cause, we want everyone to have a truly wonderful Brazilian experience,” added Snider.

The evening will feature live music by Sol Fusion, a band known for its electrifying energy, charisma, and talent that will surely leave guests wanting more. Self Regional’s Food and Nutrition team is putting together a gourmet menu that blends familiar favorites with a touch of Brazilian flair, promising to satisfy your taste buds as you soak in the lively Carnival atmosphere.

An open bar and bourbon tent will be available, and guests can look forward to a special Brazilian twist in the featured drink of the evening. Additionally, the much-anticipated Silent Auction will showcase donated items from generous local businesses, offering some of the best products and services in the area.

“Proceeds from the Ball will be used to assist the Foundation and Self Regional Healthcare in purchasing a new, 3-D mobile mammography vehicle. The new vehicle will cost $1 million. So far, thanks to a lead gift of $250,000 from the Dabo Swinney All In Team Foundation, over $500,000 has been raised,” said Ken Coffey, Executive Director of the Self Regional Healthcare Foundation.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 22, and get ready for the Rio Baile de Self. This Brazilian Carnival experience promises to be a night you won’t want to miss!
