Greenwood Residents Brace for Mixed Weather as Community Unites for Inclusive Park Initiative

Greenwood Gets Ready for a Day of Rain and Sunshine

Good morning, Greenwood residents! As you step outside today, prepare for a bit of a weather rollercoaster. This morning starts off cloudy and damp with rain showers expected. It’s wise to grab your umbrella on your way out, as there’s a 100% chance of rain, bringing around a quarter of an inch by midday.

Don’t let the rain dampen your spirits, though! As the day progresses, the rain will make way for more pleasant conditions. Expect a transformation as the clouds clear out by the afternoon, letting the sun take over for a mostly sunny day. Along with that sunshine, temperatures will start to fall, moving from a morning high of 61°F down to around 45°F. Windy conditions from the west-southwest at 20 to 30 mph will add a brisk feel to the air, so be sure to dress warmly if you’re heading out.

Once the sun sets, expect clear skies and chilly temperatures, with lows dropping to around 31°F and a gentler breeze from the west at 5 to 10 mph. So, cozy up in the evening and enjoy the crisp, clear night sky.

Community Spirit Shines Bright

While the weather takes its ups and downs, the spirit of our community remains unwavering. This fall, the Lander University chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children has been hard at work, collecting $1,900 to install a wheelchair accessible platform swing at Cambridge Park. This initiative is a testament to the dedication and love the Greenwood community has for its residents, especially those with disabilities.

The project was kickstarted by Atticus Irons, a local 22-year-old with cerebral palsy and Down syndrome, who has a deep love for swinging. Unfortunately, a visit to Cambridge Park left Atticus without a suitable swing, as the previously available swing had been replaced with one designed for much younger children.

This challenge motivated Oliver Wren Danner, a special education major and Atticus’ aid, to approach the Lander CEC and the Greenwood Parks Foundation with an idea to rectify this situation. Thanks to their efforts and the generosity of the community, Atticus, along with other residents, will soon be able to enjoy the simple joy of swinging.

The funds raised will be handed over to the Greenwood Greater Parks Foundation on December 3rd, during their board meeting at 5 p.m., in honor of Atticus Irons. The installation of this swing will add to the park’s accessibility, ensuring everyone can experience the fun and freedom it offers.

Stay tuned for updates on the installation, as the community eagerly awaits a day when Atticus and others can return to their favorite pastime at Cambridge Park.

Stay Safe and Enjoy the Day!

As today’s weather takes you from rain to sunshine, remember to be prepared for all conditions. Whether you’re braving the rain or basking in the afternoon sun, the community’s warmth and resilience are sure to brighten your day. So, whatever the weather, let’s keep the community spirit alive and strong!
