Cloudy skies blanketed Greenwood this morning, but residents can look forward to some sunshine breaking through the clouds this afternoon. Although there is a slight chance of a rain shower, today’s high will be around 80°F. Expect winds blowing from the southwest at 5 to 10 mph.
As the day winds down, the weather will remain partly cloudy. Later tonight, there is still a slight chance of a rain shower, and temperatures are expected to drop to around 63°F. Winds will be light and variable, providing a quiet evening for Greenwood’s residents.
A story of resilience and recovery emerged recently, featuring Sunni Bond, a resident of Wesley Commons, who endured a significant injury following a fall in her kitchen.
On the morning of July 31st, Sunni was at home when she lost her balance while trying to open her dishwasher. The fall caused her to hit her head against a metal door, leaving her light-headed and in considerable pain. Despite the difficult situation, she managed to reach her phone and called for help.
When the police officer arrived, he attempted to help her stand but soon realized the need for professional medical assistance and called for an ambulance. In an effort to find some humor in the situation, the EMT supervisor noted, “Well, there are three good things about this: you aren’t naked, you aren’t soaking wet, and you aren’t in the bathtub.”
At Self Regional Hospital, X-rays revealed that Sunni had two fractures in her right pelvic ring. Due to her existing heart issues, she started her hospital stay on the cardiac floor but was eventually moved to the medical/surgical floor. However, her true medical condition called for rehabilitation, which the hospital could minimally provide due to insurance constraints. After nine days of waiting, she was transferred to Greenwood Regional Rehabilitation Hospital (GRRH), where she began intensive therapy.
In another light-hearted moment during her transfer, Sunni managed to humor a young, Spanish-speaking EMT by responding to his attempt at communication in Spanish. The EMT, caught off guard by her linguistic skills, replied in English, “Well, damn! You got me! First time ever! But you got me!” Their shared laughter provided a moment of relief amid her painful recovery.
At GRRH, Sunni committed herself to a rigorous therapy schedule. Her physical and occupational therapists, Tiffany, Athena, and Rebecca, played pivotal roles in her recovery. With their support, and her determination, she aimed to return to her independent lifestyle by her 86th birthday on September 17th.
Her journey, while arduous, highlighted the importance of resilience and the support of skilled therapists. “Thank you, GRRH!” Sunni exclaimed, crediting her recovery to the dedicated professionals and her unyielding spirit.
For Greenwood residents, today’s weather may call for some flexibility in plans, but rest assured—a break in the cloudy skies is on its way. Stay tuned for more local updates and touching human-interest stories like Sunni’s, which remind us of the strength and perseverance within our community.
