Greenwood City and County Unite for Annual Food Drive to Combat Hunger

In an exciting community effort, Greenwood City and County have kicked off their annual food drive aimed at supporting local families in need. This year, the food drive officially began on January 13 and is set to run through February 20, giving residents ample time to step up and make a difference!

How You Can Help

Residents of both Greenwood City and County are strongly encouraged to donate non-perishable food items. This isn’t just about giving; it’s about coming together to fight hunger in our community. The food drive will benefit three vital and local nonprofit organizations: Greater Greenwood United Ministries, the Food Bank of Greenwood County, and the Greenwood Soup Kitchen. All of these organizations work tirelessly to ensure that families struggling with food insecurity receive the support they need.

Last Year’s Success: Can We Top It?

Last year, the community rallied together to collect a whopping 7,339 pounds of food! Greenwood City successfully gathered 4,133 pounds, while Greenwood County brought in 3,206 pounds. This year, the target is set even higher, with an ambitious goal of collecting 10,000 pounds of food. It’s a big task for sure, but with the combined efforts of both the city and county, it’s a challenge that can absolutely be met.

Mark Your Calendars for the Final Weigh-In!

The excitement culminates on February 20, with the final weigh-in scheduled to take place at 10 a.m. at the Greenwood County Farmers Market. This is where the community will find out which group—City or County—has collected the most food. In addition to the joy of giving, the group that wins the most food will earn bragging rights and take home the coveted Can of Corn Trophy. It’s all in good fun, but the real winners will be those in our community who receive the food.

The Need for Support

Given the challenges many families are facing, especially in light of recent events like Hurricane Helene’s impact, community support has never been more crucial. All the residents are reminded that every little bit counts. Whether you can spare a few cans or a whole cartful of groceries, your contributions will help make a significant impact on the lives of those who are struggling.

What to Donate

So, what kind of non-perishable foods are needed? If you are wondering what to bring, here are some suggested items to consider: canned meats, canned tuna, rice, beans, peanut butter, and more. These items have been proven to be extremely helpful for those in need and can be easily stored.

Convenient Drop-Off Locations

To make donation as easy as possible for everyone, multiple drop-off locations have been set up across both Greenwood County and the City of Greenwood. In Greenwood County, you can drop off your food donations at locations such as the Greenwood County Library, the Treasurer’s Office, the Public Works lobby, various fire stations, and several health clinics. For residents in the City of Greenwood, donations can be made at City Hall and multiple fire stations. It’s super easy to drop by and make your contribution!

Join the Movement!

This food drive is not just an event; it’s a movement that showcases the heart and soul of our community. Together we can ensure that no one in Greenwood City or County goes hungry. Let’s make this year’s food drive the best one yet by teaming up and bringing in that food! So gather your family and friends, hit the grocery store, and let’s show how much we care. Happy donating!
