Residents of Greenwood County can gear up as this year’s municipal elections loom ahead. Several nonpartisan posts are up for grabs, beginning with the commencement of filing for these posts from noon next month on August 1 till noon on August 15. Applications will be accepted at the Greenwood County Voter Registration and Elections Office located at 600 Monument St., Suite 13. Office hours are 8.30 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.
To file for these positions, the fees depend on the pay of the elected position. Three council seats within the City of Greenwood are open: Wards one, three and five. The respective incumbents for these wards are Councilwoman Niki Hutto, Councilwoman Betty Boles, and Councilman Matthew Miller.
A long-standing seat in Greenwood’s Commissioners of Public Works, presently held by Stephen Gilbert, is also part of this year’s election. Gilbert stepped in to complete the tenure of ex-Commissioner Mike Monaghan, who resigned for health-related reasons earlier this year.
Other towns within Greenwood County also have open roles. In Hodges, the position of Mayor Michael George is anticipating a new candidate, along with four town council seats. Troy is looking for changes in two town council seats, while Ware Shoals has three openings.
Five positions on the Greenwood County School District 50 board are also up for grabs. The board seats presently occupied by Ken Cobb, Sabrina Conner, Tony Bowers, David H. Trent, and Shelby Dominick Reed will be a part of this year’s electoral opportunities.
The weather during the registration period is expected to be a mix of clouds and sun, with scattered thunderstorms predicted. The temperature will reach a high of 86°F, with winds blowing southeast at around 5 to 10 mph. Evening time may witness occasional heavy rain showers and a drop in temperature to around 72°F. Nevertheless, with a 70-90% chance of rain, those planning to file should be ready for wet weather.
