Greenwood County Council Meeting – Exciting Updates for Residents!
The Greenwood County Council gathered on March 7, 2025, for an important meeting that brought some delightful news to the community. Among the many matters discussed, the council approved salary increases for three key elected officials, celebrated the accomplishments of local young athletes, and addressed critical transportation funding for the county’s future.
Salary Increases for Elected Officials
One of the main topics of the evening was a vote to raise salaries for Sheriff Dennis Kelly, Clerk of Court Chastity Copeland, and Coroner Sonny Cox. The adjustments came as a direct response to the compounded cost of living raises granted to county employees over the past four years, which amounted to a 10% increase.
The new salaries for these dedicated officials are as follows:
- Sheriff Kelly saw a significant jump from $96,525 to $106,479.63.
- Clerk of Court Copeland’s salary will increase from $72,930 to $80,451.27.
- Coroner Cox will receive an increase from $59,952.75 to $66,135.68.
What’s interesting is that typically, county elected officials don’t receive raises during their terms, unlike their rank-and-file employees. However, in this case, all three officials were reelected unopposed last November, which made it a fitting time for salary reviews to take effect.
Transportation Funding Established
Moving on to essential services, the council approved a new contract with the McCormick Senior Center to provide much-needed transportation services. An allocation of $150,000 has been set aside for the McCormick Area Transit (MAT) program, improving local transit for residents in the area.
What makes this funding even better news is that MAT is transitioning to include federal support as well, alongside the county funding, ensuring a more robust and sustainable transportation system as the population grows.
Addressing Overflow Parking at Gateway Landing
As if that wasn’t enough, the council also took steps to address overflow parking issues seen at Gateway Landing due to the rising numbers of boaters visiting the area. An initiative to install a roll curb will help manage this congestion, with the project estimated to cost around $12,150. This will be funded through hospitality tax dollars, ensuring that the overflow parking situation is under control.
Food Truck Ordinance on the Horizon
With the increasing popularity of food trucks, the council is contemplating an ordinance to regulate their operation when multiple trucks are present on a single property. This is likely to bring more organization to this vibrant part of Greenwood’s food scene while ensuring everyone can enjoy good eats safely.
Celebrating Young Champions
On a lighter note, the council took a moment to recognize the young stars of the Ninety Six Wildcat Youth Wrestling Club, who recently clinched first place in the South Carolina Youth Wrestling Duels Championship. Their dedication and hard work showcased the talent flourishing in Greenwood County.
Community Food Drive Success
Community spirit shone through when council member Robbie Templeton shared the news of the recent food drive, which collected an impressive 24,319 pounds of food. This effort was commendable, though it barely missed breaking the previous record by just 498 pounds. Kudos to everyone involved in making this event such a success!
