Greenwood County Council Meeting Highlights Key Local Issues

Greenwood, SC – The Greenwood County Council met on Tuesday, with a concise but impactful agenda that resonated deeply with the community.
Recognition of Leath Suicide Prevention Month
The meeting commenced with the council proclaiming September as Leath Suicide Prevention Month. Warden Thomas Robertson and Associate Warden of Programs Michele Carter from Leath Correctional Institution were on hand to accept the proclamation.
“With September being Suicide Prevention Month, we are diligently trying to prevent suicides,” said Michele Carter. “We wanted to bring awareness to inmates at Leath and residents in Greenwood County. Tell them that they all matter too and encourage them. It’s important for the community to come together and watch out for each other,” she added.
Road Safety Concerns
The council also heard a presentation regarding fatal car and motorcycle accidents from Rick Green of the Upper Savannah Council of Governments. Green highlighted a worrying rise in road departure fatalities over the past year and a half.
“We are working to widen shoulders, add rumble strips, and expand areas where drivers can safely pull off,” explained Green, addressing how these measures aim to curb the increasing numbers.
Renovation Projects Approved
Council members approved pre-construction and construction contracts for the upcoming renovations to Park Plaza and the Greenwood County Courthouse. The project is slated to begin on September 16 and will see various county departments, including building inspection, planning, engineering, emergency services, and lake management, relocated to the Airport Annex during the renovations.
The project will be executed in five phases, with an estimated cost of $11 million and a completion date set for 2026.
Special Tax District Commissioners
Wrapping up the meeting, the council accepted nine Special Tax District commissioners for districts 1, 3, 5, 6, and 7.
“This was one of our more efficient meetings, but the topics discussed are crucial for our community,” noted one council member. “From improving road safety to enhancing our county facilities, these actions will benefit Greenwood County residents for years to come.”
