Greenwood County Takes Steps to Keep It Beautiful

If you’re in Greenwood County, there’s exciting news on the horizon! The community is gearing up for some amazing events focusing on environmental stewardship. A fun Lake Greenwood cleanup is scheduled for March 8, 2025, from 9 a.m. to noon. Mark your calendars and get ready to roll up your sleeves for a day dedicated to keeping our beautiful spaces clean!

Last year’s cleanup effort was a smashing success—over 300 volunteers showed up and collected hundreds of bags of trash. This year promises to be just as impactful! Plus, volunteers will receive T-shirts and lunch, making it an enjoyable day out in the fresh air.

Weather Forecast

Before you head out, check this forecast! Expect mostly cloudy skies early in the day, then turning partly cloudy as the afternoon rolls in. Temperatures are expected to be around 65°F, with gentle winds from the SSW at about 5 to 10 mph. At night, lows will dip to around 49°F, with slightly stronger winds from the SW at 10 to 15 mph.

Celebrating Environmental Education

Environmental Education Difference Maker Award. This honor recognizes outstanding teachers who shine in the realm of environmental education.

This year’s winner is Kristi Murphy, a dedicated fourth-grade teacher at Dr. Benjamin E. Mays Elementary. She has been applauded for her exceptional leadership in recycling and sustainability. The previous year’s recipient, Michelle Davis from Ninety Six Primary, earned accolades for her creative efforts in establishing a pollinator garden and organizing educational field trips to recycling facilities. These initiatives not only inspire students but also contribute to the environment.

What Keeps KGCB Education Going?

The KGCB Education program, which has been making waves since its inception in January 2022, is all about promoting litter education in schools across Greenwood County. It thrives on its volunteer-based structure, rallying students, teachers, and school officials to collaborate for a cleaner community. The emphasis is primarily on elementary schools, although there’s a growing effort to engage high school students too.

In 2023, Greenwood High School received a monetary award from Palmetto Pride for its creative Litter Free Games initiative. That’s impressive! Collaborating with organizations like Palmetto Pride and Take Action SC, KGCB Education offers valuable educational resources that tackle litter prevention and sustainability. These resources include engaging lesson plans, puppet shows, and hands-on activities that aim to inspire kids to care for their environment.

KGCB Education volunteers don’t just stop at providing educational materials. They also conduct campus litter sweeps during school visits, helping students grasp the crucial impact litter has on our world. They’ve even distributed tree seedlings and organized hands-on learning experiences, such as planting paperwhite bulbs to teach students about life cycles!

Mark April as Earth Month!

As we get closer to spring, April will be designated as Earth Month. This month is filled with diverse activities, including fun read-aloud sessions and even more campus litter sweeps! The goal? To further educate children on the importance of litter prevention. The chairperson of KGCB Education, Glawe, highlights the importance of involving young minds in these pivotal conversations. The hope is that efforts today will lead to a cleaner, greener Greenwood County in the long run.

If you’re passionate about maintaining a beautiful environment, consider volunteering with KGCB Education. They are always on the lookout for enthusiastic individuals to join their ranks to help support their mission. For those seeking updates on upcoming events and volunteer opportunities, don’t forget to follow KGCB Education’s Facebook page.

Together, let’s come together to make Greenwood County a beautiful place for everyone!
